A disturbing case from Bihar's Madhepura has come to light, where a 22-year-old woman paid the price for marrying the man she loved — by being beaten at the hands of her own family. The incident in Hasanpura village, under the Shankarpur police station limits, surfaced after a video of the assault spread rapidly across social media. The moment it went viral, police swung into action and began probing the matter.

## A Love Marriage the Family Could Not Accept
Pooja Kumari, a resident of Hasanpura village, had married Bittu Kumar in a love match roughly a month earlier. What made the union especially contentious was the relationship between them — Bittu is her nephew by family ties, and the two households stand very close to one another. The marriage triggered anger among both families as well as the villagers.

## Panchayat Imposed a One Lakh Rupee Fine
The families and villagers convened a social panchayat, which ruled that the couple should be separated. The panchayat slapped a fine of one lakh rupees on the boy's side and decided that this sum would be handed over to the girl's family. Local mukhiya Birendra Sharma has confirmed that such a panchayat was indeed held.

## Dragged Home and Thrashed on June 8
According to reports, on June 8 the woman's parents arrived at her in-laws' house, persuaded her, and brought her back to her parental home. It is alleged that the moment she reached the house, the assault began. The viral video clearly shows the woman's mother grabbing her by the hair and slamming her to the ground, while her father presses his foot down on her neck. As soon as police were informed, they rescued the woman and took her to the police station.

## Police Action
Shankarpur SHO Rajiv Kumar said a written application has been received from the victim. He stated that the case is being investigated on the basis of the viral video and the application, and that strict action will be taken against anyone found guilty, as per the law.

## The Mother's Tears and Accusations
The woman's mother, Dulari Devi, said through tears that she had raised her daughter with great love and educated her up to matriculation, but the daughter went against the family's wishes and entered into a love marriage. She lamented that the dreams the family had nurtured for the daughter's wedding had all shattered. The mother also alleged that her daughter, under the influence of her in-laws, was filing a case against her own parents. She reiterated that the man her daughter married is, by relation, her nephew. The mother admitted that she had beaten her daughter following the dispute with the boy's side, and bluntly said she now has no relationship left with her.

## The Boy's Father Recounts the Full Story
The boy's father, Gajendra Rajbhar, said the couple had run away from home a few days before the matriculation exam. After an extensive search, the girl was handed back to her family. Later, the panchayat decided to separate the two and ruled that the boy's side would pay one lakh rupees for the girl's marriage. He said that despite financial hardship, he somehow managed to arrange the 1 lakh rupees and gave it to the girl's parents.

According to Gajendra Rajbhar, the girl was then sent to her maternal grandmother's home, but it was from there that the two reconnected and once again left home, travelling to another state. A few days later, both returned to the village. He alleges that on June 8 the girl's mother forcibly took her from their house and made her stand outside in the sun for a long time, after which the parents beat her brutally and even attempted to kill her. He then dialled 112 to alert the police. The police took the woman to a hospital, from where she submitted her application at the station. The boy's father also said his family is fully prepared to keep their daughter-in-law with them.
