A few months ago in Purnia, a joint initiative by the Bihar and central governments laid the foundation for a scheme that aims to supply free solar energy to the state's BPL families. A large number of people across the Purnia division are set to benefit directly from this effort. According to the electricity department's data, around 2 lakh BPL families have already been identified in Purnia district alone. For now, in the first phase, 16,000 families will receive the direct benefit. Notably, the scheme is not confined to Purnia but is being rolled out across the whole of Bihar.

Sharing details about the scheme, Purnia's Electrical Executive Engineer Balbir Prasad Bagish said the government is mainly running two schemes related to solar energy. The first of these is the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. Under this scheme, domestic consumers can apply online to install a solar energy system in line with their sanctioned load.

He explained that under this scheme the government provides a subsidy of up to 30,000 rupees for a 1 kilowatt system, 60,000 rupees for a 2 kilowatt system, and up to 78,000 rupees for systems of up to 3 kilowatts. According to the official, domestic consumers can avail of this scheme very easily.

## 2 Lakh BPL Families to Get the Free Solar Benefit
The government's second important scheme is the Utility Led Aggregation Model, also known as the Mukhyamantri Kutir Solar Panel Yojana. Through this scheme, BPL families in Bihar will be provided with solar systems completely free of cost. In Purnia district too, preparations are under way to extend this benefit to more than 2 lakh identified BPL families.

A 1 kilowatt solar system will be installed free of charge in the homes of these families, and beneficiaries will not have to pay any fee for it. The entire cost of the scheme will be borne by the government itself. It is expected that this will provide these families with free electricity for around 20 years.

## First Phase to Cover 16,000 Families
According to the electricity department, in the first phase in Purnia, 16,000 BPL families will be linked to the scheme, after which other eligible families will be added in stages. The official also said that the Bihar government is continuously running campaigns to promote solar energy. In the first phase, the target is to connect around two and a half lakh BPL families across the state to the scheme within roughly 150 days.
