Wholesome films that the entire family can sit down and watch together carry a charm of their own. Every head of a household dreams of watching a movie with all his loved ones around him. In today's Bollywood, such films — ones the whole family can enjoy together — are rarely made. But there was a time when a handful of production houses entertained audiences purely through such clean, family-friendly cinema, and earned handsomely from it too. One such banner is Rajshri Productions. Within a span of just seven years, Rajshri made three films that found a place in every viewer's heart. All three turned out to be super-duper hits, and their music was blockbuster. The remake of the third film went on to set brand-new records of earnings and became an all-time blockbuster.

## Rajshri's Identity and 'Geet Gaata Chal'
Rajshri Productions has always been known for making clean films, and that tradition continues even today. By choosing stories rooted in family values, innocent love and emotion, the banner delivered films that touched the heart. The year 1975 is remembered for timeless films like 'Sholay' and 'Deewar'. Several other films released that same year too and became milestones in the history of Hindi cinema. It was in this very year, 1975, that Rajshri's film 'Geet Gaata Chal' also arrived, releasing on 16 October 1975. It was inspired by Rabindranath Tagore's story 'Atithi'. The film was directed by Hiren Nag and produced by Tarachand Barjatya.

## Music Drove the Success
Sachin Pilgaonkar and Sarika played the lead roles in the film. Besides them, Urmila Bhatt, Madan Puri and Padma Khanna appeared in important parts. The music played a huge role in the film's success. The music was composed by Ravindra Jain, who also penned the songs. The title song 'Geet Gaata Chal, O Saathi Gungunata Chal' was sung by Jaspal Singh. Another superhit number, 'Shyam Teri Bansi Pukare Radha Naam', was sung by Jaspal Singh and Aarti Mukherjee, and remains just as popular today. The film also featured chaupais (verse couplets). Sachin Pilgaonkar revealed in an interview that he struck up a friendship with Tarachand Barjatya's son, Rajkumar Barjatya, at their very first meeting. When the film was ready, it was released in only a single cinema hall. Everyone feared it would flop. For three days not a single viewer turned up, but from the fourth day the theatre began running houseful and the film proved a superhit.

## The Next Idea Born from 'Love Story'
The press party for 'Geet Gaata Chal' was due to be held. Sachin Pilgaonkar set out from home early, and since he had time on his hands, he caught an English film, 'Love Story', in the meantime. That film was based on Erich Segal's 1970 novel. After watching it, Sachin went straight to the 'Geet Gaata Chal' press party and told Rajkumar Barjatya about the film. Sachin said in an interview, 'I narrated the story of 'Love Story' to Rajkumar Barjatya and told him it was a romantic film in which the girl dies.' Hearing the story, Rajkumar was deeply impressed and began thinking about making their next film. The film was put together with the entire team of 'Geet Gaata Chal'. Sarika could not be part of it as she did not have the dates, so Ranjeeta Kaur was cast instead. This film was 'Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se', which released on 7 April 1978.

## The Magic of 'Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se'
The title song of 'Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se' was finalised later, after it had been composed. The story was written by Madhusudan Kalelkar, while the screenplay was written jointly by Hiren Nag and Madhusudan Kalelkar. The dialogues were penned by Vrijendra Gaud. Interestingly, Madhusudan Kalelkar was a friend of Sachin's father. The music was by Ravindra Jain, and it played a massive role in the film's success. The film had a total of five songs, and every one of them was a superhit. The title track 'Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhe Se' was sung by Hemlata and touches the heart to this day. At the 26th Filmfare Awards, the film received five nominations. It was a huge success. Made on a budget of 48 lakh, the film collected 1.5 crore and proved to be a superhit.

## The Failure of 'Sun Sajna' and the Making of 'Nadiya Ke Par'
After the immense success of 'Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se', Rajkumar Barjatya's brothers pressured him to make a film with Mithun Chakraborty and Ranjeeta Kaur. Bowing to the family's pressure, Rajkumar made a film titled 'Sun Sajna'. Released on 8 August 1982, it turned out to be a disaster. Around the same time, he also made another film, 'Nadiya Ke Par', with Sachin Pilgaonkar and Sadhana Singh. This film was based on Keshav Prasad Mishra's famous novel 'Kohbar Ki Shart'. It was shot over a full month in Vijayipur village in the Kerakat tehsil of Jaunpur. The film was made on only half the story of the novel. The plot centred on the love story of Chandan (Sachin) and Gunja (Sadhana Singh).

## 'Nadiya Ke Par', Steeped in Bhojpuri Flavour
'Nadiya Ke Par' released on 10 October 1982. It was directed by Govind Moonis. Once again, the music was composed by Ravindra Jain. The film had a total of five songs, and every one of them was a superhit. All the songs were written by Ravindra Jain himself and carried a folk-song touch. The texture of the film too was Bhojpuri. The most interesting fact is that the film's total budget was roughly ₹18 lakh. This simple, understated film performed brilliantly at the box office, collecting around ₹5.4 crore worldwide, and proved to be a superhit.

## Three Words on Paper and the Suggestion for a Remake
In 1989, Rajkumar Barjatya's son Suraj Barjatya was getting his blockbuster film 'Maine Pyar Kiya' dubbed into Telugu. The work was being done at a studio in Chennai, where Rajkumar Barjatya was also present. He lovingly wrote three words on a piece of paper and handed it to Suraj. Written on it was a suggestion for the next film to make. Obeying his father's wish, Suraj decided to make the film. In fact, Rajkumar had suggested making a remake of 'Nadiya Ke Par'.
