Some residents of the building tried to climb down from windows using sarees, while others reached the rooftop and kept crying out for help. ## Chaos Erupts at 2:30 in the Dead of Night

According to police, a report of fire came in at around 2:30 am from a five-storey residential building in Tughlakabad Extension. Within minutes, flames and smoke had spread across the entire structure. Residents living around the building, which stands in a narrow lane, were jolted awake by the sudden screams and the choking smoke.

Rajan, a local resident, says he first noticed smoke rising at around 2 am. In the blink of an eye, the fire took on a terrifying form. He said people in the neighbourhood even tried to douse the flames in the early stages, but by then the two-wheelers parked on the ground floor had already been engulfed. The fire spread rapidly and the situation soon slipped out of control.

## Residents Barely Managed to Survive

Eyewitnesses say that as smoke filled the building, breathing became difficult and people began to choke. In that desperate situation, several residents took the risk of escaping through the windows. Some knotted sarees together to make a makeshift rope and climbed down to save their lives. Others managed to get out through the rear of the building.

## Cries for Help Kept Coming From the Rooftop

The most heart-wrenching scene of the tragedy was that of the people trapped on the rooftop of the building. Suman, who lives nearby, recounts that as the fire grew, cries of "save us, save us" rang out continuously from the roof. She said, "People were screaming for help, but the fire was so fierce that no one could go inside and bring them out. Everyone could only watch helplessly."

## Eight People Rescued Safely

With the help of police and firefighters, eight people trapped inside the building were brought out safely. All of them were immediately taken to Safdarjung Hospital and the AIIMS Trauma Centre. However, three members of one family could not be saved. The deceased have been identified as 28-year-old Pankaj, his 50-year-old mother Guddi, and his 20-year-old sister Soni. All of them lived on the third floor. Another family member aged 18 and a 70-year-old grandmother were badly burnt and are undergoing treatment.

## Thick Smoke Swallowed the Entire Area

Neelu Devi, who lives nearby, said the dense smoke from the fire had gripped the whole area. The conditions were such that nothing was visible even a short distance away. She said, "The smoke had reached our building. The moment we learnt about the fire, we left home immediately and rushed out."

## Short Circuit Suspected, Probe Underway

Initial investigations suggest the fire was likely caused by a short circuit on the ground floor. However, police and a forensic team are examining the case in detail to determine the real cause of the blaze. Local councillor Chaudhary Bhagbir says no sign of any conspiracy or foul play has been found so far. A pall of grief hangs over the area after this tragic incident. According to neighbours, the screams and pleas for help that echoed through the night still ring in their ears.
