There is welcome relief on the way for heat-weary residents of Haryana. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) says that, driven by a western disturbance, intermittent rain will continue across the state and Chandigarh between June 13 and June 17. In the neighbouring hill state of Himachal Pradesh, meanwhile, the weather has turned far more aggressive, prompting a yellow alert for five districts.

## When and Where Haryana Will Get Rain
According to the forecast, today, June 14, isolated showers are expected in Mahendragarh, Rewari, Sirsa, Fatehabad, Hisar, Bhiwani and Charkhi Dadri. It helps to know the terminology here: rain at ‘a few places’ means precipitation over 25 to 50 percent of a district, while rain at ‘isolated places’ refers to up to 25 percent of the area.

On June 15, isolated rain is forecast across Haryana and Chandigarh, with the exception of Sirsa and Fatehabad. The spread widens the next day, June 16, when 15 districts — Mahendragarh, Rewari, Jhajjar, Gurugram, Nuh, Palwal, Faridabad, Rohtak, Sonipat, Sirsa, Fatehabad, Hisar, Jind, Bhiwani and Charkhi Dadri — could see light to moderate rain at a few places. By June 17 the activity stretches to 18 districts, where rain may be recorded at isolated spots.

## What the Forecast Says About Temperatures
Surender Paul, Director of IMD Chandigarh, said the maximum temperature will climb gradually by four to six degrees over the next five days, after which there will be no major change. He made it clear that this spell of rain is largely the result of a western disturbance.

## Safety Tips for Rough Weather
To stay safe during gusty winds and lightning, the department has issued a set of important precautions.

- Stay indoors, keep windows and doors shut and avoid non-essential travel.
- Take safe shelter and never stand under trees.
- Do not lie down on a concrete floor or lean against concrete walls.
- Unplug all electrical appliances.
- Keep away from anything that can conduct electricity.

## Yellow Alert for Five Himachal Districts
Himachal Pradesh is expected to see heavy rain through the day today. The IMD has flagged the possibility of thunderstorms with lightning in Shimla, Kullu, Mandi, Kangra and Chamba, issuing a ‘yellow weather warning’ for all five districts. As a result, these areas could face strong winds and bursts of thunder and lightning at scattered locations throughout the day. Light rain is likely to persist across most of the state until June 19. Over the next few days the minimum temperature is expected to stay near normal, while the maximum could rise by 2°C to 4°C in one go.

## How Much It Rained in the Last 24 Hours
Over the past 24 hours, several parts of Himachal received light to moderate rain. During this period, 6.5 mm of rain was recorded against a normal of 2.7 mm. The heaviest fall was 23.1 mm in Dharamshala, followed by 19.1 mm in Kangra, 10 mm each in Kufri and Una, 7.4 mm in Bilaspur and 1.2 mm in Shimla. The rain pulled the minimum temperature down by 2°C to 5°C, keeping it between 6°C and 24°C, while the maximum dropped by 4°C to 11°C to settle in the 14°C to 33°C range.

## Where the Mercury Was Highest and Lowest
The maximum temperature at key locations was as follows — 22°C in Shimla, 29°C in Dharamshala, 25°C in Solan, 22.9°C in Kangra, 16.5°C in Mandi, 25.6°C in Sundernagar, 15.5°C in Kufri, 23°C in Bhuntar, 16.1°C in Kalpa, 29.5°C in Nahan and 22.5°C in Chamba. The state's highest maximum temperature of 33.6°C was logged in Una, while the lowest minimum of 6.3°C was recorded at Keylong in Lahaul and Spiti district.

## Relief and Damage Both in Chamba
In Chamba district, the recent torrential rain brought relief to farmers and orchard growers but also caused damage at several places. At the Government Model Senior Secondary School Bhadiyan Kothi in Chamba headquarters, the protection wall built on the hillside collapsed under the heavy rain, allowing water and debris to surge straight into the school premises. The sudden flooding and rubble sparked panic on the campus. The downpour was so intense that the school management had to summon parents to ensure the children's safety, after which all the students were sent home safely with their guardians.
