I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning Review (2026): Lola Petticrew Leads Clio Barnard's New Drama

Filmmaker Clio Barnard returns with 'I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning', a festival-darling drama starring Lola Petticrew and an ensemble cast, arriving in UK cinemas on December 4.

Over the past 16 years, Otley-born filmmaker and documentarian Clio Barnard has built a strong reputation as a leading social realist director in Britain. Following acclaimed projects like The Arbor, The Selfish Giant, Dark River, and Ali & Ava, her latest Birmingham-set festival favorite I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning is generating significant buzz. Adapted from Kieran Goddard's novel of the same name, the project features Furious breakout Lola Petticrew alongside notable British and Irish actors including Daryl McCormack, Anthony Boyle, Jay Lycurgo, and Joe Cole. The plot centers on a group of childhood friends who spent years partying and now face unfulfilled ambitions amid a severe housing crisis.

Trailer Insights and Musical Vibe

The first trailer for this housing estate drama delivers plenty of high-energy partying, arguments, banter, and the existential weight of approaching middle age. Set to the classic sounds of The Streets from their album Original Pirate Material, specifically the track 'Turn The Page', the film balances a celebration of tight-knit community with a mournful look at its loss among demolished council blocks. Backed by top-tier acting talent, the project showcases Barnard's signature blend of gritty yet beautiful social realism on the big screen.

Festival Reception and Release Schedule

Having already secured enthusiastic responses at various film events this year, including Cannes where it picked up both the Audience Award and the Palm Dog prize, the film enters its release window with considerable momentum.
