What first looked like a suicide — a body hanging from a mango tree in the Laukaria police station area of Bagaha — turned into a murder investigation once the police started digging. The probe revealed that a husband had strangled his wife and then strung her body up on the tree in an attempt to pass the killing off as self-harm.

## How the truth unravelled
It was the evidence gathered from the scene and the condition of the body that first cast doubt on the suicide angle. The more the police examined the clues, the weaker that theory became, steering the investigation toward the victim's own household.

On the directions of the Bagaha SP, a special team was formed under the leadership of Ramnagar SDPO Ragini Kumari. The team unravelled the entire case in just 24 hours and put the accused husband behind bars.

## Body found on the night of 10 June
According to information, the woman's body was found hanging from a tree in a mango orchard in Narkati village on the night of 10 June. The next day she was identified as 24-year-old Hemlata Kumari, a resident of Garkati village.

When the police reached the home of the deceased as part of the inquiry, her husband Gautam Kaji tried to flee the moment he saw them. Officers caught hold of him and began questioning. His attempt to run only deepened the suspicion against him.

## Killed in the field, then hung from the tree
During interrogation, Gautam Kaji confessed to the crime. He said an argument broke out with his wife during a domestic dispute and that he beat her. He then took her to a sugarcane field and strangled her to death there.

According to the accused, he kept the body hidden for some time after the killing and, under cover of night, hung it from the mango tree so the death would appear to be suicide. Acting on his information, the police identified the actual spot of the murder and recovered several key pieces of evidence.

## Case of dowry harassment and murder
Based on a complaint by the victim's father, the police registered a case of dowry harassment and murder. The accused has been arrested and sent to judicial custody.

SP Ramanand Kaushal said the police would press for a speedy trial and work to ensure that the guilty man is punished at the earliest. For now, the swift and scientific investigation has shown that the bid to disguise the crime could not hold up for long.
