Himachal Pradesh is due to vote in its next assembly election at the end of 2027 — still about a year and a half away. Yet a single question keeps surfacing in the state's political circles well ahead of time: if the BJP returns to power, who will occupy the chief minister's chair? Union Health Minister JP Nadda has now gone a long way toward settling that speculation during a media interaction in Shimla.

## The name Nadda backed
Nadda was clear that his own active responsibilities lie in national politics. At the same time, he signalled that the state BJP's principal face in the 2027 contest would be none other than Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur. Spelling out his own position, he said plainly, I am a Himachali and I will work from Delhi. In effect, he himself put a stop to the talk of his taking charge of the state.

## A nod to the public's trust
Opening his remarks, Nadda thanked the people of the ‘Devbhoomi’ of Himachal Pradesh. He said the state's voters had, time and again, placed their unshakeable faith in the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the Bharatiya Janata Party's development-driven politics and in its model of good governance.

As the strongest proof of that trust, he pointed out that across three consecutive Lok Sabha elections, all four seats in Himachal had gone to the BJP. According to Nadda, this makes it clear that the people of the state stand firmly behind a politics of development, national interest and public welfare.

## Calling the local polls a referendum
Nadda also cited the recently concluded panchayat and municipal body elections, in which the BJP secured broad public support. He refused to treat this as mere electoral success, describing it instead as a clear public referendum against the state's Congress government. The mandate, he argued, reflects both the people's confidence in the development journey underway under Prime Minister Modi and their direct, growing dissatisfaction with the Congress government's failures.

## Why the statement matters
The question of the BJP's chief ministerial face in Himachal has long fuelled guesswork. Those conversations had repeatedly floated the names of JP Nadda and Anurag Thakur as possible figures to lead the state. Nadda's latest remarks have, for now, laid all such speculation to rest.

It is also worth recalling that in Himachal the BJP has not allowed either Shanta Kumar or Prem Kumar Dhumal to become chief minister more than twice. Dhumal was indeed projected as the party's face a third time, but he lost his own seat in the 2017 assembly election and therefore could not reach the chief minister's office. It was at that point that the party handed the responsibility to Jai Ram Thakur.
