"title": "FIR Filed Against Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata Over Speech Warning Aimed at a Community",
"summary": "Acting on a businessman's complaint citing a March 2026 political speech, Kolkata Police have registered an FIR against Mamata Banerjee, while the CID continues to question her nephew Abhishek Banerjee.",
"content": "In West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress appears to be quietly falling apart from within. The 28-year-old TMC has not been able to come to terms with its defeat even after 28 days. One after another, the party's MLAs, MPs and councillors are walking away. From Kolkata to Delhi, voices of discontent against Mamata's leadership are growing, and leaders big and small seem to be in a race to quit the party. Amid this turmoil, a fresh problem has landed at Mamata Banerjee's door — Kolkata Police have registered an FIR against her.\n\n \n\nWhat Is the Whole Matter?\n During a political speech in March 2026, Mamata Banerjee had warned that if a particular community were to unite, it could have serious consequences for others. Citing these public speeches, a businessman had lodged a complaint at the Hare Street police station. That complaint has now been formally registered as an FIR by Kolkata Police.\n\n \n\nQuestioning of Abhishek Banerjee\n On the other side, police have already registered an FIR against Mamata's nephew and MP Abhishek Banerjee. In a forged-signature case, Abhishek Banerjee appeared before the Bengal CID on Thursday, where he was questioned. He came before the investigating agency following a High Court order. During the roughly five-and-a-half-hour-long questioning, CID officers also asked him about his diary. According to sources, the CID had asked Abhishek to bring along the same diary in which MLAs' signatures were claimed to be recorded. The agency has now summoned him again for questioning on June 14. As soon as he left the CID office, Abhishek headed straight to Mamata Banerjee's residence.\n\n \n\nPolice Parade Jahangir Khan Through the Streets\n In addition, police staged a public parade of TMC leader Jahangir Khan in Falta. Khan was made to walk in half pants through the very streets and lanes of Falta where his writ once ran. It may be noted that Jahangir Khan faces allegations of extortion, illegal encroachment and intimidating people.\n\nWhat this means for you\nWhat this means for you:\n\n• Across India: The case shows that ordinary citizens can file complaints and trigger an FIR over communal remarks in public speeches, raising the accountability of political leaders.\n• In West Bengal: The exodus from the ruling party and action against its leaders is making state politics unstable, which could affect governance and local decisions in the days ahead.",
