The slanging match between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the principal opposition Congress over the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PM Awas Yojana) in Chhattisgarh has now grown sharper. The state's Deputy CM, Vijay Sharma, has written a letter to Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai that has sent the political temperature soaring. In the letter, Sharma claims that over the past two and a half years the Sai government has notched up significant and historic achievements on the PM Awas Yojana. He also launched a direct and pointed attack on the previous Congress government, charging that during its rule the state's mandatory 40 percent share (matching grant) for the PM Awas scheme had been held back, leaving lakhs of poor families in the state deprived of the pucca houses that were their right.

Through this letter to the Chief Minister, Vijay Sharma also took aim at the old wounds and internal contradictions within the Congress. He made special mention of the much-discussed resignation of TS Singh Deo, who was the Panchayat Minister during the Congress regime. In the letter, Sharma wrote that when the government was unable to provide adequate funds for housing for the poor during Congress rule, Singh Deo, troubled by his own government's policies and indifference, stepped down with a heavy heart. Sharma also explained to the Chief Minister how the previous government had blocked the rights of the poor, whereas the current government has given the scheme record momentum in just two and a half years.

Reacting to this very letter to Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, former Deputy CM TS Singh Deo has now responded with equal candour and composure. Taking a dig, Singh Deo said, "I don't know the reason, but these days ministers of the ruling side are remembering me far too much, and I am grateful to them for remembering me this way." Displaying his political straightforwardness, Singh Deo fully accepted the point raised in the letter — that the PM Awas scheme did not gain pace during the Congress era and that he stepped back from his post when he was unable to fulfil his responsibility. However, hitting back at the Sai government, he also alleged that an illegal deduction of Rs 10,000 each is currently being made from beneficiaries in the name of PM Awas, and that villagers are having to spend money from their own pockets to complete their homes.
