Public transport in western Uttar Pradesh took a significant turn on Friday. Speaking from Lucknow over video conferencing, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath flagged off 45 electric buses and 3 hydrogen buses of the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation that will run between the Noida, Greater Noida and YEIDA region and Jewar airport. On the same occasion, he also launched the Noida Electric Bus Depot.

## Green Mobility Aimed at Every City and Village
The Chief Minister tied the new service to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of green mobility and sustainable development for the country. He said that in the coming years the state government intends to connect every city and village to a petrol- and diesel-free electric transport service. Stressing that every citizen deserves better, more comfortable and environment-friendly travel, he remarked that as the transport department's fleet keeps growing, its work should look just as big.

## Noida International Airport to Begin Operations on June 15
In his address, the Chief Minister pointed to the larger challenges facing the world today. He said global warming and climate change, along with the ongoing standoff in West Asia, are pushing the world toward air pollution, excessive rainfall, drought and hailstorms, and that all of humanity is paying the price of wars imposed upon it.

Against this backdrop, he announced that India's largest airport — the Noida International Airport — is set to begin operations from June 15. To give travellers and citizens in the country's biggest IT and electronic hub smooth air connectivity, the three authorities — Noida, Greater Noida and YEIDA — have launched this bus service through the transport corporation. He described it as an important step toward achieving the net zero goal.

## A Region That Has Grown Into a Major Industrial Hub
Yogi said Noida, Greater Noida and the Yamuna Authority have emerged as major centres for IT-electronics, data centres, startups, semiconductors and other industrial activity. As the world's biggest companies are being drawn here, he argued, environment-friendly transport becomes the need of the hour. Metro services already run in some pockets, but for last-mile connectivity, the electric bus service is set to prove a milestone.

He noted that by June 15, the three authorities together will roll out 110 electric buses. As demand grows, this number will be raised in stages until a total of 500 buses are operated through the three authorities.

## The Difference Between UP Before and After 2017
Drawing a contrast between Uttar Pradesh before and after 2017, the Chief Minister said a clear transformation is visible in the new Uttar Pradesh of a new India — a change brought about by the double-engine government over the past 9 years. He recalled that before 2017, amid broken roads, missing electricity, insecurity and disorder, citizens faced a crisis of identity, and the idea of investment in the state seemed like a daydream.

Today, by contrast, Uttar Pradesh is known for world-class road and air connectivity. He said the state now has a road network of 4 lakh km, including highways and expressways, with excellent inter-state connectivity. A state once notorious for its dilapidated roads has now carved out an identity as the expressway state.

The Chief Minister recalled that during the 2019 Prayagraj Kumbh, the government announced the Ganga Expressway in the cabinet. Travellers on this largest expressway in the country, running from Meerut to Prayagraj, are often astonished that this is the same Uttar Pradesh where one could once not tell the difference between a road and a pothole. He listed the Purvanchal, Bundelkhand and Gorakhpur Link expressways, the Delhi-Meerut 12-lane expressway and the soon-to-be-inaugurated Lucknow-Kanpur expressway as the new face of the new UP.

## Five International Airports Now in the State
Speaking on air connectivity, the Chief Minister said the Prayagraj airport was built in just 11 months, while Jewar has become home to the country's largest airport. Recalling Ayodhya, he said that in the Treta Yuga Lord Shri Ram returned to Ayodhya in the Pushpak Viman, but thereafter the people of Ayodhya never received air services, and the city remained neglected for thousands of years and humiliated even after independence. Today, he said, an airport dedicated to Maharishi Valmiki is operating there.

He pointed out that the state now has 5 international airports, including those at Lucknow, Ayodhya, Kashi, Kushinagar and Noida. The Noida airport, he added, is set to establish itself not just for passengers but also as a cargo and MRO hub.

## Over 700 Electric Buses Across 17 Municipal Corporations
The Chief Minister said that of the 20 cities in the country running metro services, 7 are in Uttar Pradesh alone. More than 700 electric buses are already running across the state's 17 municipal corporations, and the same facility is now being launched in Noida. He explained that electric buses earlier had to be brought in from outside, but now Tata Motors and the Hinduja Group's Ashok Leyland have each set up two electric bus manufacturing plants in Lucknow, offering the facility locally.

## Hydrogen From Sewer Water in the YEIDA Region
The Chief Minister announced that from today, 3 hydrogen buses are also being put on the road in the Yamuna Authority area, provided to YEIDA by NTPC. He shared an interesting technical detail — the hydrogen for these buses will be produced not from ground or surface water, but from sewer water. Calling green hydrogen mobility an innovative concept, he said these buses too will operate near Jewar airport and will play a major role in cutting air pollution and protecting children, the elderly and the sick from a toxic environment.

## A State Moving Toward Net Zero
Yogi said the state government is fully committed to achieving the net zero goal. In line with this, the Uttar Pradesh Clean Air initiative is being taken forward at a cost of Rs 2741 crore with the help of the World Bank — a major effort to move the state toward cleaner air and sustainable development.
