The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has now flagged thunderstorms, rain and gusty winds across 24 districts for the day.

## Where Caution Is Most Needed
If you live in Ghaziabad, Mathura or Agra, step out carefully, as these areas face an alert for winds blowing at 70 to 80 kilometres per hour. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for 24 districts in all, including Ghaziabad, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Aligarh, Mathura, Agra, Firozabad, Etawah, Jalaun, Jhansi, Mahoba, Chitrakoot, Prayagraj, Mirzapur and Chandauli.

## Districts Bracing for 70km/h Winds and Rain
Alongside these, Mirzapur, Chandauli, Varanasi, Banda, Chitrakoot, Kaushambi, Prayagraj, Fatehpur, Sonbhadra, Sant Ravidas Nagar, Ghazipur, Farrukhabad, Kannauj, Kanpur Dehat and Kanpur Nagar, along with nearby areas, could see storms at 50 to 60 kilometres per hour, with speeds rising up to 70 kilometres per hour. Light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is forecast for these districts.

## A Welcome Shower for Farmers
In Raebareli, the sudden shift in weather brought major relief from the searing heat. Dark clouds gathered, strong westerly winds picked up, and rain began to fall. For farmers, this downpour is a lifeline, as it will nourish their paddy nurseries and directly benefit the crop.

## Heat Set to Return From Tomorrow
According to the IMD, this respite is short-lived. From tomorrow, harsh sunshine and heatwave conditions are expected to return across the state. The department says no rain or storms are likely anywhere tomorrow, with a heat alert in place for all districts, including Mathura, Agra and Ghaziabad. Pre-monsoon activity has been noticeably stronger over the past two days, yet the state has fallen behind on June rainfall. Records show a 23 per cent shortfall against the average so far. The eastern belt, covering the Jabalpur, Rewa, Shahdol and Sagar divisions, has recorded 55 per cent less rain than average, while the western belt, comprising the Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, Gwalior, Chambal and Narmadapuram divisions, has seen 2 per cent more than average.

## Monsoon Timeline and the El Nino Worry
The monsoon is expected to reach the state between 22 and 24 June. However, the onset of El Nino has deepened concerns. The IMD estimates that El Nino could weaken the monsoon this year, with 2026 likely to see only 90 per cent of the 50-year average rainfall. That shortfall would hit the paddy crop directly, leaving it weaker than usual.
