"summary": "Two young men in Gautam Buddha Nagar and Kanpur posted on Instagram before attempting suicide; the moment Meta flagged the alerts, UP Police reached the spots within minutes and saved both lives.",
"content": "Acting swiftly within the past 24 hours, the Uttar Pradesh Police saved the lives of two young men who were on the verge of taking their own lives. One of them, a resident of Gautam Buddha Nagar, was about to attempt suicide after breaking up with his girlfriend, while the second was so distressed at having his phone number blocked by his fiancee that he too had decided to end his life. Just before the attempt, both had recorded reels and posted them on Instagram. Meta forwarded an alert about these posts to the social media cell at police headquarters, after which the police reached both locations within minutes and saved their lives.\n\n'This Is My Last Video, Who Knows If I'll Be Around Again'\nThe 24-year-old man from Gautam Buddha Nagar had slipped into deep despair after his breakup and decided to take his own life. With the intention of dying, he swallowed a large number of sleeping pills and put up an Instagram post that read that this was his last video and that he did not know whether he would live again. Meta sent the email about this to police headquarters on 12 May at 12:12 am. The moment the alert came in, the Gautam Buddha Nagar police reached the spot in just five minutes, rushed the man to hospital and saved his life.\n\nMan Was Distressed After Fiancee Blocked His Number\nThe second case of an attempted suicide involves a 30-year-old man from Kanpur who was deeply troubled after his fiancee blocked his number. He tied a piece of cloth to the ceiling fan, put it around his neck and posted a video on Instagram while trying to hang himself. Meta emailed this video to the police social media cell on 12 May at 12:02 am. On receiving the information, the Kanpur police reached the location in seven minutes, removed the noose from the man's neck and saved his life. The man told the police that his marriage had been fixed, but for the past few days his fiancee had blocked his number, and it was this distress that had driven him toward the act.\n\nTogether With Meta, UP Police Has Saved Over 3,000 Lives So Far\nThe UP Police and Meta joined hands in 2022 to save people who post about suicide or make reels related to it on Facebook or Instagram. Meta passes on this information to the UP Police via email. Acting on such alerts, the UP Police has so far stopped 3,081 people from taking their own lives between January 2023 and 8 June 2026. For saving lives this way through Meta's suicidal alerts, the UP Police has also been honoured with the SKOCH Award-2025.\n\nWhat this means for you\nWhat this means for you:\n\n• Across India: If you or someone you know is in mental distress, remember that suicide-related posts on social media can now reach the police as alerts, opening a window for timely help.\n• In Uttar Pradesh: Thanks to this Meta-backed system in UP, police are reaching such posts within minutes, so the chance of getting immediate help in a crisis is far higher.",
