The Indian Army is about to get a new head. The government has decided to appoint Lieutenant General Dheeraj Seth as the country's next Chief of Army Staff. At present he serves as the Army's 'Vice Chief', and before this he held charge as the Southern Army Commander.
When and From Whom He Takes Over
Lieutenant General Dheeraj Seth will assume the role of Army Chief from the afternoon of June 30, 2026. That is the very day on which the current Chief of Army Staff, General Upendra Dwivedi, retires from service, after which the command will pass into Seth's hands.
A Key Role in Operation Sindoor
As Southern Army Commander, he made an important contribution during Operation Sindoor. That experience now gives him a strong foundation as he prepares to shoulder the Army's highest responsibility.
Early Years and Commissioning
Dheeraj Seth studied at the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla. He was commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986. From then until now, his military journey has spanned nearly four decades—an unusually long and experience-rich career for any officer.
Four Decades of Wide-Ranging Experience
Over his long career he has worked across every kind of domain—operational, strategic, capability development and institutional. Through this broad experience he has made a significant contribution to strengthening the Indian Army's combat capability and to its long-term transformation. He has handled varied responsibilities across different operational areas.
Major Commands and Leadership
As a Lieutenant General, he commanded the Sudarshan Chakra Corps, counted among the Indian Army's premier strike formations. He then served as the General Officer Commanding of the Delhi Area. After becoming an Army Commander, he led both the South Western Command and the Southern Command. Commanding two operational army commands and providing strategic oversight in key areas for more than two and a half years stands out as a special part of his experience. Alongside this, he has also held several important staff and strategic appointments.
A Grip on Modern Warfare and Technology
His role has been crucial in striking a balance between how new technologies should be used to meet operational needs and what the battlefield of the future is likely to demand. Throughout his tenure he has been regarded as a capable officer. He has also completed the prestigious 'Command and Staff Course' in Paris, reflecting his deep strategic thinking and strong understanding of present-day military affairs.
What It Means for the Army
The Indian Army is counted among the most powerful forces in the world, and its courage and combat skills are praised abroad as well. Against this backdrop, the appointment of an experienced officer like General Dheeraj Seth as Army Chief is expected to further enhance the capability and skill of the troops.
