115 People Liberated in Overnight Operation
A major human trafficking and forced-labour network has been exposed in Bihar's Samastipur district after a sweeping rescue mission stretched from Wednesday night through Thursday morning. Police and partner agencies freed a total of 115 individuals from multiple locations across the area. Of those rescued, 48 are girls and 67 are boys, and several among them are reported to be minors.
Victims Brought In Under False Promises of Government Work
Early findings from the investigation indicate that the victims were young people from economically vulnerable families in Assam and West Bengal. They were allegedly deceived with assurances of government employment and brought to Samastipur under that pretence. Once there, they were confined in a facility referred to as a centre, where surveillance was maintained around the clock. The victims have stated that anyone who raised the possibility of going home or quitting the work was threatened and physically assaulted.
A Missing Girl Case Unravelled the Entire Network
The racket first came to light when police began following up on a complaint about a missing young woman. As investigators traced the threads of that inquiry, they arrived at this trafficking network and launched a coordinated large-scale rescue effort in response. The operation brought together the police, the Anti Human Trafficking Unit, the women's police station, several civil society organisations, and other agencies, all working in concert.
SP Arvind Pratap Singh Confirms All Victims Are Safe
Superintendent of Police Arvind Pratap Singh confirmed that every one of the rescued individuals has been brought to safety. He stated that questioning of suspects is actively ongoing and that investigators are mapping every connection within the network. A number of individuals have already been taken into custody for interrogation.
Mastermind Still Being Hunted
Investigative agencies are now focused squarely on tracking down and apprehending the person or persons who orchestrated the trafficking ring. With this case now in the open, police in Samastipur are also examining whether other similar networks are active in or near the district. Work is simultaneously underway to formally identify each victim and reach out to their families so the reunification process can begin. Both law enforcement and multiple civil society groups are keeping a close watch on further developments in this case.
