When 'Tadap Tadap' Made Salman Khan Break Down in Tears: Ismail Darbar Recalls the Silence on Bhansali's Set

'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam' composer Ismail Darbar has revealed that Salman Khan broke down crying the moment he heard 'Tadap-Tadap', leaving Sanjay Leela Bhansali's room in stunned silence.

The Song That Hushed the Whole Room

The 1999 film 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam' is still counted among Bollywood's most cherished films, but a behind-the-scenes story tied to one of its songs has now surfaced — and it is every bit as emotional as the film itself. In a recent interview with Filmygyan, the film's music composer Ismail Darbar revealed that the track 'Tadap-Tadap Ke Is Dil Se Aah Nikalti Rahi' once reduced Salman Khan himself to tears.

A Sudden Hush in Bhansali's Room

According to Darbar, the incident dates back to the days of the song's recording and shoot, when Salman could not hold back his emotions and wept in front of everyone. He narrated the whole episode in detail. In his words, 'One day Sanjay Leela Bhansali was listening to this song in the room. The song had some very deep and painful words. The moment it began to play, a sudden silence fell over the room. I asked, what is the matter, brother, why has everyone gone quiet? Then Salman Khan said with a very heavy heart — whenever I listen to this song, it causes me a lot of pain. Please, don't play this song in front of me.'

The composer added that Salman looked deeply restless and troubled in that moment. He said, 'I have actually seen Salman crying and screaming loudly in that moment. I saw that intensely emotional side of him with my own eyes, and everyone was stunned to see it.'

Bhansali Too Admitted the Set Felt Different

Interestingly, director Sanjay Leela Bhansali had himself described the mood on this film's set as something special. In an interview with ETimes, he had admitted that the atmosphere during the shoot was unlike any other. In Bhansali's words, 'Yes, there was love in the air at that time. But it wasn't just between Salman and Aishwarya — there was a deep bond among all of us. Zohra Sehgal, Helen Aunty, Salman, Aishwarya, Vikram Gokhale — we were all like one big family. I don't think I have had such a wonderful experience on the shoot of any other film.'

Both the Music and the Story Held Audiences

'Tadap-Tadap' remains a favourite for the heartbroken even today, but it was far from the film's only hit. Songs like 'Chand Chhupa Badal Mein', 'Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyan Maaf Hon', 'Dholi Taro Dhol Baaje' and 'Nimbooda Nimbooda' were also hugely popular. Alongside the music, the story kept viewers glued to their seats, and audiences wholeheartedly embraced the pairing of Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai.

A Blockbuster at the Box Office

The film delivered on the commercial front as well. Made on a budget of around 16 crore, 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam' turned into a blockbuster and earned more than 51 crore worldwide.

The Story Off the Screen

Reports suggest that it was during the shooting of this very film that the relationship between Salman and Aishwarya began. However, the two went through an extremely bitter breakup in 2002 and never worked together again afterwards. On Simi Garewal's chat show in 2012, Aishwarya said that she had completely closed that chapter of her past and did not wish to discuss it on any public platform. Later, in April 2007, Aishwarya married Abhishek Bachchan, and their daughter Aaradhya was born in 2011.
