L-49 Guava Farming Turns Into a Cash Crop in Lakhimpur Kheri, Two Harvests a Year and Earnings in Lakhs

Farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri are shifting from traditional crops to L-49 guava orchards, reaping fruit twice a year and selling it at 50 to 80 rupees per kilo for handsome profits.

A Shift Toward Horticulture

In Lakhimpur Kheri district, the way farmers think about cultivation is changing fast. Rising input costs and an unpredictable climate have pushed them to look for crops that cost less but pay more. In that search, horticulture — and guava farming in particular — is emerging as a dependable option. Demand for guava stays steady in the market through every month of the year, which means growers usually get a fair price for their produce.

What Makes the L-49 Variety Special

Among the many guava varieties, L-49 has become a favourite with farmers these days. The reason is straightforward: it yields more, and its fruit is regarded as top quality. The variety is also known as Sardar guava and counts among the country's most popular and commercially successful types.

Its fruits are medium to large in size with white pulp. Sweet, fragrant and nutritious, they never run short of buyers. The biggest advantage is that the variety yields fruit twice a year with ease. The plant grows to a height of roughly 3 to 4 feet and starts bearing fruit within a year of planting — a real benefit for farmers and gardening enthusiasts alike.

Easy to Reach Distant Markets

Another strength of L-49 is how well its fruit holds up. The guavas do not spoil quickly in transit, so farmers can ship them to far-off markets without losing the produce. With higher demand in big cities, the prices are good too. Many growers are earning solid profits by selling directly to mandis and wholesale traders.

Good for Health as Well

Guava is considered an extremely beneficial fruit. It is rich in Vitamin-C, fibre, calcium, iron and several kinds of antioxidants. Doctors recommend eating it regularly, as it helps boost immunity, strengthen digestion and guard against many ailments. Growing awareness about health has further lifted its demand in the market.

Government Support and a Farmer's Account

To promote guava cultivation, the horticulture department is providing subsidies to farmers so they can set up orchards easily and earn in lakhs. Farmer Ravindra Singh says guava farming can bring in substantial profits. According to him, his L49 guava orchard spreads over about 15 acres and yields fruit comfortably twice a year. In the market, this guava sells for between 50 and 80 rupees per kilo. He also points out that the variety's tree is so sturdy that it has often withstood light storms without breaking.
