No Fertiliser, No Pesticide: How a Moradabad Farmer's Home-Grown Brinjals Are Inspiring a Switch to Organic Living

In Uttar Pradesh's Moradabad, farmer Omprakash Singh is growing brinjals entirely through natural methods at home and in his fields, and distributing them free to neighbours to encourage them to take up organic farming.

A Shift in Moradabad's Fields

Across Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh, farmers are increasingly turning away from chemical-based cultivation and embracing organic, natural farming instead. By giving up chemical fertilisers, many are now raising crops in a healthier, more natural way. What stands out is that several of them are doing this not just for themselves — to spread awareness, they are practising organic farming both at their homes and in their fields.

One Farmer Leading by Example

One such farmer is Omprakash Singh, who has grown organic brinjals at his home as well as in his fields. He not only uses these brinjals himself but also hands them out free of cost to his neighbours, explaining to them the benefits of organic farming along the way. The result of his effort is that people around him are being motivated to adopt poison-free vegetables and are gradually moving towards an organic lifestyle.

How the Brinjals Are Grown

Omprakash Singh says he grows brinjals at home and also cultivates a variety of organic crops in his fields. According to him, no chemicals of any kind are used in this farming.

It is entirely natural cultivation, relying only on vermicompost, jeevamrut and earthworm manure. He says most of his farming is carried out in exactly this natural manner. As part of his home gardening, he is growing brinjals on roughly one bisa of land, raising them to full size purely through natural means. These are the same brinjals he uses at home and also distributes free to those living nearby.

The Thinking Behind Giving Them Away

According to Omprakash Singh, he gives the brinjals to people around him free of charge so that they too can take up natural farming and consume more naturally grown produce.

He believes that natural produce is extremely beneficial for health. With this in mind, he appeals to others to adopt natural farming at their own homes or on their farmland and to make naturally grown food a part of their diet — because, in his view, this is the best path when it comes to good health.
