One of India's biggest FMCG players, Nestle, has flatly rejected a social media storm targeting its flagship Maggi noodles. The company insists that allegations of worms and contamination inside the packet have been proven completely false by independent laboratory testing, with the product clearing every quality and food safety benchmark.
How the controversy began
The row erupted when a user on the social media platform X complained of finding worms in a Maggi packet. The grievance reached the food regulator FSSAI, which served Nestle a notice seeking a response. The regulator had also directed that the batch in question be pulled from the market immediately.
What the company told the stock exchanges
Responding to queries from the NSE and BSE about a media report published on 12 June, Nestle India issued a statement. The company said the complaint had reached it through FSSAI after being raised on X. Nestle India was unequivocal: it fully rejects the claims circulating in the media — based on an unverified account — alleging contamination in Maggi noodles.
No contact with the complainant
According to the company, the complainant has so far neither provided any sample for testing nor responded in any way, and the social media account behind the claim is now unreachable. Following standard procedure, Nestle sent a reference sample from the same batch to an FSSAI-recognised, NABL-accredited independent laboratory. That testing found no contamination of any kind in the sample.
Clean lab reports across the board
Nestle said it went further, having both the batch samples and market samples checked for quality. The results showed all the samples conformed to quality standards with no sign of contamination anywhere. This, the company argues, makes it clear that the complaint against it is entirely baseless.
Full report handed to the regulator
In reply to FSSAI's inquiry, Nestle India said it had already submitted detailed information to the concerned authorities — including all relevant facts, quality records, the batch and market samples, and test reports. The company reiterated that it follows stringent quality and food safety standards across all its manufacturing operations and remains fully transparent with regulators. Nestle expressed confidence that the facts and evidence will make the truth of the matter entirely clear.
