The National Investigation Agency (NIA), one of the country's most closely watched investigative bodies, has gained an officer who spent a large part of his career in some of India's toughest terrain. The central government has posted senior Chhattisgarh cadre IPS officer P. Sundarraj as Inspector General (IG) in the NIA. With his deputation now cleared, the decision is being widely discussed across police and administrative circles.
A Name Made in Bastar
Sundarraj is counted among the most experienced and capable police officers in Chhattisgarh. Holding several key positions in the state, he has left his mark with his administrative skill and leadership. His long stint as IG in the Bastar region drew particular praise. During that period he ran anti-Naxal operations effectively and played a major role in strengthening the security setup of the area. His approach in Naxal-affected zones and his active part in security operations kept him consistently in the spotlight.
The Story Began in Tamil Nadu
P. Sundarraj was born on 27 February 1980 in the Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu. His early schooling took place at local schools in Coimbatore. For his graduation he chose BSc Agriculture. After that he turned towards the civil services and threw himself into UPSC preparation.
Becoming an IPS Officer in 2003
In 2003, Sundarraj cleared the civil services examination and realised his goal of becoming an IPS officer. He was allotted the Chhattisgarh cadre, and as it turned out, most of his career was spent in Naxal-affected areas. That very experience would later prove to be his biggest strength.
A Big Win for Chhattisgarh Police
Reaching the rank of IG in a premier agency like the NIA, which investigates matters tied to national security and terrorism, is considered a significant responsibility for any police officer. The central government handing this role to Sundarraj is being seen as a major achievement for the Chhattisgarh police.
His appointment has not only raised the prestige of the Chhattisgarh police but has also emerged as an inspiration for other officers in the state. There is a sense of celebration in police and administrative corridors over his elevation to IG in the NIA.
