Major Smuggling Bust in Mahasamund
A significant case of illegal timber smuggling has come to light in the Mahasamund district of Chhattisgarh, where smugglers employed a tactic reminiscent of the film 'Pushpa'. A truck was loaded with 23 tonnes of Khair wood and concealed under a tarpaulin sheet to evade detection. However, a joint operation by the local police and cyber cell successfully intercepted the vehicle. The seized consignment has since been handed over to the Forest Department.
The Value of Khair Wood
According to TrendKia, Khair wood is primarily used to produce kattha, an essential ingredient in pan masala and other consumer products. Due to its high market value, it has become a lucrative target for smugglers. Sources indicate that while the procurement cost of the wood is approximately 18 to 20 rupees per kilogram, it fetches between 220 and 250 rupees per kilogram in the market.
Investigation Into the Syndicate
SDO DP Bais of the Pithora Forest Department stated that the case involving the seized wood is currently under investigation. While the truck driver claimed during questioning that the consignment was destined for Raipur, internal sources suggest the load was intended for Haryana, where it commands a better price. The Forest Department is now working to determine the origin of the timber and identify the criminal syndicate involved. Police are actively questioning several individuals to dismantle the broader network behind this smuggling operation.
