Confidentiality on World Cup 2027 Strategy
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia recently stated in an interview that discussions regarding India's roadmap for the 2027 World Cup are 'not for public disclosure'. He declined to comment on specific team players or their future involvement. While names like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are consistently part of the conversation when it comes to India's 2027 campaign, Saikia firmly asserted that 'boardroom strategic discussions' must remain internal.
Silence on Players' Future Roles
Both seasoned players are considered poised to participate in the major tournament, however, selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar and Head Coach Gautam Gambhir have yet to confirm whether there will be a definitive place for these white-ball stalwarts in the squad. When questioned about whether BCCI has conducted any internal deliberations on this matter, Saikia responded that all relevant stakeholders are aligned and that it is an ongoing process.
BCCI's Continuous Consultation Process
Devajit Saikia elaborated, 'We possess a strong team and a multitude of experts. All concerned individuals are integrated into the decision-making process.' He further added, 'Any decisions made involve the Cricket Committee, selectors, and everyone else, including the support staff, Head Coach, and the players involved.' Saikia also noted, 'Regular interactions are in progress. Therefore, we do not require any specific meetings. It is a continuous process.' Reaffirming his stance, Saikia stated he would not disclose confidential boardroom information. 'I do not believe I should reveal anything to the media or the public because these are strategic discussions. I am not authorised to speak about this to the media,' he said.
BCCI's Stance on Bangladesh Series
Regarding the prospect of an upcoming cricket series with Bangladesh, the BCCI Secretary affirmed that the board would follow directives from the Indian government on this matter. The Indian cricket team had postponed its white-ball tour to Bangladesh 'last year' due to civil unrest in the neighbouring country. Currently, Bangladesh has an elected government, and the new Bangladesh Cricket Board president, former captain Tamim Iqbal, has expressed keen interest in re-establishing bilateral cricket ties with India.
Adherence to Government Policy Paramount
When asked if BCCI's position would change now, Saikia responded, 'BCCI is a cricket controlling board, and we have no involvement with the ongoing politics in other nations.' He further explained, 'As BCCI, we adhere to the policy of the Indian government, whether it involves participating in bilateral or multinational sporting events. Whatever rules and policies are formulated by the central government, we abide by them, just like other sports associations, be it football, athletics, or any other sport.' Saikia made it clear that BCCI is indifferent to which party governs Bangladesh. He stated, 'It doesn't concern us who runs the government in a country, be it democratic, undemocratic, or a dictatorship. That is not our mandate. Our job is to administer cricket. Whenever a tour for bilateral matches in a foreign country is scheduled, we will proceed according to our plans and schedule.'
