Young Indian batsman Vaibhav Suryavanshi is in the spotlight right now not for his runs, but for an on-field flare-up. After India A went down in a super over against Sri Lanka A in a tri-series match, the scenes that played out at Dambulla grabbed the attention of the entire cricket world. The real reason behind the friction has now come to light.
Tempers Flare on the Field
The thrilling contest at Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium was decided in a super over, which India A ended up losing. With players from both sides still out on the field after the match, Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Sri Lanka A player Vishen Halambage came face to face. The argument that broke out between them grew so intense that it escalated into pushing and shoving, forcing the other players to step in and break it up.
How the Confrontation Began
According to TrendKia, the spark for the whole row came from a remark by Sri Lankan player Vishen Halambage. After sealing the win, he looked towards Vaibhav Suryavanshi and told him the match was over and that he should go home now. The jibe did not sit well with Vaibhav, who hit back immediately. Within moments the two players were standing extremely close to each other and a scuffle-like situation developed. Seeing things get out of hand, players from both Sri Lanka A and India A intervened to calm the situation. The incident, however, took the shine off what had been a gripping finish.
Questions Raised Over the Super Over Decision
Alongside this controversy, the decision to play a super over has also come under scrutiny. Several reports claim the light on the ground was not sufficient at the time and that the Sri Lanka A camp was not in favour of a tie-breaker. It is being said that India A captain Tilak Varma was in favour of the super over and had even discussed it with the umpires.
On the other hand, some officials connected with Sri Lanka Cricket believe the super over should not have been held in those conditions at all. It has also emerged that, following the incident, there was a discussion within the Sri Lanka A team about going to the Indian dressing room to apologise for their conduct. So far, however, there has been no official confirmation on the matter.
