Amid recent news of an aircraft accident in the United States, a major incident has now come out of Russia. The Tu-22M3 bomber, considered one of the country's most powerful warplanes, plunged into a dense Siberian forest. In a relief, no lives were lost in the crash and the pilot along with all four crew members managed to get out safely.
Where and When It Happened
According to information from Russia's Defence Ministry, the accident took place on Monday in the Irkutsk region of Siberia. At the time, the Tu-22M3 strategic bomber was on a training flight. The aircraft lost control mid-flight and went down. The ministry clarified that the plane was flying without any combat payload, meaning no weapons or ammunition were loaded on board.
How the Crew Survived
The Defence Ministry said that the four-member crew, including the pilot, managed to eject and get clear in time, before the aircraft struck the ground. All of them are completely safe, and after landing on the ground they faced no danger of any kind.
A Chilling Scene in the Viral Video
Soon after the crash, several videos of the Tu-22M3 going down spread rapidly across social media. One video clearly shows the aircraft diving steeply towards a heavily forested area, just a short distance from the bank of the Angara river. Within seconds, the plane crashes into the forest, after which a large plume of smoke is seen rising from the spot.
Governor Shares More Details
Irkutsk governor Igor Kobzev shared further details of the incident in a statement. He said the aircraft crashed near the village of Kamenka. Firefighters reached the site and got to work putting out the blaze. All four crew members suffered minor injuries and were subsequently taken to hospital.
How Significant Is the Tu-22M3 Bomber
The Tu-22 is a Soviet-era supersonic bomber, given the code name 'Backfire' by NATO. The aircraft has been capable of carrying hypersonic 'Kinzhal' missiles. Russia has also used it in the ongoing wars in Syria and Ukraine, which is why this bomber is counted among the key weapons of the Russian air force.
