Brazil's 1970 World Cup-Winning Defender Brito Passes Away at 86, Football World in Mourning

Brito, the celebrated defender from Brazil's 1970 World Cup-winning side, has died at the age of 86. He represented the national team in 61 matches over his career.

A glittering name from Brazilian football history has gone quiet forever. Brito, a defender from the Brazil squad that lifted the 1970 World Cup, has passed away at the age of 86. The Brazilian Football Confederation confirmed his death on Thursday, though it did not share any details about the cause.

A Long and Memorable Run With the National Team

Brito's international career stretched across roughly eight years. He wore the Brazil jersey from 1964 to 1972 and represented his country in a total of 61 matches during that span. Before the title-winning campaign of 1970, he had also been part of the squad at the 1966 World Cup.

His biggest signature was the defensive pairing he built alongside Wilson Piazza. Between 1964 and 1972, the partnership between the two made Brazil's backline exceptionally strong and dependable — a combination that is still spoken of with admiration.

Federation President Pays Tribute

Remembering the departed player, Brazilian Football Confederation president Samir Xaud said, “Brito was one of the greatest defenders in the history of Brazilian football. His contribution to the 1970 World Cup will always be remembered.”

He added, “I pay tribute to this legend of my country. His fighting spirit will remain an inspiration for our players.”

Achievements That Went Beyond the World Cup

Brito's success was not confined to the World Cup alone. He was also part of the Brazil side that captured the Copa Roca in 1971 and the Taça Independência in 1972. Notably, Brazil has won the World Cup a record five times, and the team will begin its bid for a sixth title on Saturday with a clash against Morocco.

A Lasting Mark at Club Level Too

Brito spent nearly his entire club career in his home country. He turned out brilliantly for celebrated clubs such as Vasco da Gama, Flamengo, Internacional, Botafogo and Corinthians. At one stage in his career he also moved to Canada, where he spent some time with the Montreal Castors. His 61 appearances for the national team and the formidable partnership he shared with Piazza have earned him a permanent place in the hearts of Brazil's football fans.
