Curaçao at the 2026 FIFA World Cup: This time, a tiny nation is set to write history in the football world — a country that is still home to a small community of people who left India to settle there decades ago. Curaçao, a small island nation in the Caribbean, is taking part in the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the first time in its history. With a population of around 1.7 lakh and an area of just 444 square kilometres, it has become the smallest country ever to qualify for the World Cup in terms of both population and area.
Curaçao Lies North of Venezuela
Curaçao is an island nation located in the southern Caribbean Sea and forms part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Geographically, it sits roughly 65 kilometres to the north of Venezuela and about 80 kilometres south-east of Aruba. Apart from the main island of Curaçao, the country also includes a small, uninhabited island called Klein Curaçao. According to 2026 figures, its population is a little over 1.7 lakh. Its capital is Willemstad. Together with Aruba and Bonaire, it completes the well-known ABC islands.
Famous for Its Orange-Based Drink
Curaçao is also recognised around the world for its famous 'Curaçao liqueur', made from a special variety of orange. The drink is prepared from the dried peels of a bitter local citrus fruit known as 'laraha'. For a long time, the people here struggled to gain a distinct identity and the status of a separate country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It was the result of these efforts that, in 2010, Curaçao was granted autonomy and became an autonomous country under the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Equal Numbers of Hindus and Muslims
According to data from Pew Research, the largest community in the country is Christian, with around 94 per cent of people following Christianity. Meanwhile, about 3.3 per cent of people are not affiliated with any religion. Buddhist, Jewish, Muslim and Hindu communities also live here. Estimated figures show that the number of Hindus and Muslims in Curaçao is exactly equal — both communities have roughly 340 followers each, making up about 0.2 per cent of the total population. In addition, the country is home to 849 Buddhists and 510 Jews.
The Country's First-Ever World Cup Appearance
Curaçao secured the top spot in its qualifying group on 18 November 2025, booking a place in the FIFA World Cup for the very first time. In doing so, it broke Iceland's earlier record and earned the distinction of becoming the smallest qualifier in World Cup history. At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Curaçao has been placed in Group E. Its first match will be played on 14 June 2026 against Germany at the NRG Stadium in Houston, USA. After that, it will face Ecuador on 20 June and Ivory Coast on 25 June.
A Moment of Great Pride for a Tiny Nation
This tiny country, with a population of around one and a half lakh, is now fully ready to leave its mark on the world's biggest football tournament. Despite extremely limited resources, reaching the World Cup is being seen as nothing short of a dream come true for Curaçao. There is an atmosphere of excitement and enthusiasm across the country over this achievement, and people are celebrating it as one of the greatest sporting accomplishments in their history.
