The biggest story from this FIFA World Cup 2026 Group-K fixture was not a Portugal win, but a Portugal stumble. Cristiano Ronaldo's side, widely tipped as serious title contenders, were pegged back to a 1-1 draw in their very first match by DR Congo. On paper the weaker team, Congo not only forced a strong opponent to share the points but also rewrote a piece of their own football history.
A Fast Start and an Early Lead
The opening exchanges belonged almost entirely to Portugal. A midfield boasting names like Bruno Fernandes, João Neves, Vitinha and Bernardo Silva kept hold of the ball and pressed forward relentlessly. The reward arrived quickly. In the sixth minute, Pedro Neto delivered a superb cross and João Neves rose to meet it with an excellent header, putting Portugal 1-0 ahead.
Congo Strike Back Just Before Half-Time
Far from folding after conceding, DR Congo refused to back down. A forward line led by Yoane Wissa and Cédric Bakambu gradually turned up the pressure on the Portuguese defence, and just before the half-time whistle their persistence paid off. From a cross that followed a corner, Yoane Wissa produced a header that left Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa with no answer, and the ball nestled into the net. This was far more than an equaliser. Playing their first World Cup since 1974, it was Congo's first-ever goal at the tournament, sending their fans into wild celebrations.
Ronaldo Left Frustrated After the Break
The goal completely disrupted Portugal's rhythm. The second half was a tightly contested affair with neither side able to pull ahead. Cristiano Ronaldo, counted among the greatest players the game has seen, struggled throughout the match. He was handed two excellent chances to score after the interval but failed to convert on both occasions. In the dying moments, in the 90th minute, a low strike from Bruno Fernandes also slipped just wide of the post.
Congo's Wall and Portugal's Setback
Congo's defenders held their nerve superbly right to the final minutes, repelling every Portuguese attack. Portugal threw everything forward in injury time, yet they could not break down Congo's resolute back line. When the final whistle blew, the celebrations in the Congo camp looked like those of a winning team. For Portugal the result felt like a genuine setback, because despite dominating possession for the entire match they could not turn their chances into goals and were left dropping 2 points.
