In their Group H opener at the FIFA World Cup in Miami, Saudi Arabia hinted at a major upset by holding two time world champions Uruguay to a 1-1 draw. For long stretches Uruguay poured forward in wave after wave, yet the Green Falcons held their ground until the final whistle. Despite facing 29 shots and 14 corners and absorbing relentless second half pressure, the Saudi side walked away with a point from their first match, while Marcelo Bielsa's team were left frustrated in their search for a win.
Uruguay Dominate Early but Are Let Down by Finishing
Uruguay, who lifted the World Cup in 1930 and 1950, walked out as clear favourites and were on the front foot from the start. As early as the fifth minute, Maxi Araújo crafted a superb move from the edge of the box, only for Mohammed Al-Owais to deny him with a fine save. Uruguay kept the ball for most of the game, but time and again their finishing faltered in front of goal.
Saudi Arabia Strike a Shock Blow Before Half Time
Saudi Arabia's coach Georgios Donis fired up his players, and it paid off right at the end of the first half when his team took the lead. Motab Alharbi surged forward from midfield and won a dangerous free kick. Then, in the 41st minute, Mohammed Kanno climbed highest to meet Musab Aljuwayr's corner. Fernando Muslera blocked the header, but Abdulelah Al-Amri reacted quickest to the rebound and tucked it away to hand Saudi Arabia a stunning lead. The goal knocked Uruguay out of their rhythm and stirred hopes in the Saudi camp of another shock to rival their historic win over Argentina in Qatar four years ago.
Uruguay Launch a Second Half Onslaught
The lead lifted Saudi Arabia's confidence. At the other end, Bielsa introduced fresh legs at half time and Uruguay grew even more aggressive. With a steady stream of crosses and attacks they pinned Saudi Arabia back, but their goalkeeper stood firm time after time to keep his side in the contest. Across the match Uruguay registered 57 percent possession, 29 shots, 11 shots on target and 14 corners, yet Al-Owais's outstanding display kept the ball out of the net.
Araújo Rescues a Point in the Final 10 Minutes
The pressure finally told with 10 minutes left on the clock. Viñas once more rose highest inside the box and Al-Owais again kept it out, but this time the rebound dropped to Araújo. The winger brought the ball under control and slotted home an equaliser on his World Cup debut. Chasing a winner, Uruguay threw everything forward in the closing minutes, but the Saudi side refused to break. Federico Valverde and José María Giménez both unleashed powerful efforts, yet Al-Owais produced more brilliant saves to end the game level at 1-1.
