Playing a World Cup on home soil for the first time in 32 years, the United States gave their fans exactly the start they had hoped for — an unforgettable one. A 4-1 demolition of Paraguay in the opening match not only laid a powerful foundation for the campaign but also rewrote several long-standing chapters of American World Cup history. The whole contest turned on Folarin Balogun's commanding first-half display.
A Record-Breaking Win Etched in History
This victory was special on many counts. The USA had never scored more than three goals in a World Cup match before, yet here they put four past their opponents — their best-ever output in the tournament. On top of that, the three goals they netted in the first half alone became a new American World Cup record. To put it in perspective, four years ago at the Qatar World Cup the USA managed just three goals across their four matches combined.
Dominant from the First Whistle
The Americans played on the front foot from the opening minute. Christian Pulisic was hugely influential in the first half, and it was his work that forced Damian Bobadilla into an own goal in the seventh minute — meaning the hosts opened the scoring off their rivals' mistake. Balogun then took charge, striking in the 31st minute and again in the fifth minute of first-half stoppage time to send the side in 3-0 up at the break. In the dying moments of second-half injury time, Gio Reyna added a fourth to complete the historic scoreline.
Paraguay's Fightback Falls Flat
Paraguay, the South American side appearing at their first World Cup in 16 years, never recovered from those early blows. They tried to claw their way back after falling behind but could not find a way through. Their only goal came through Mauricio in the 73rd minute, by which point it served as little more than a consolation.
Pochettino's New Vision and a Roaring Stadium
Under new coach Mauricio Pochettino, the USA looked like a team playing in a transformed style. The 70,492 spectators inside the stadium were left spellbound by their aggressive, rhythmic football.
Balogun: A New American Hero from New York
The true star of the night was Folarin Balogun. Born in New York and raised in London, the striker was making his World Cup debut — and he made history in his very first match, becoming the first American player since 1930 to score more than one goal in a single World Cup game. Intriguingly, three years ago Balogun chose to represent the USA rather than England. Had he opted for England, he might have struggled to even break into that strong squad — but by choosing the USA, he has now become one of the nation's footballing heroes.
