For residents of Delhi-NCR sweltering through severe heat, the weather is shifting—and the respite is expected to last into next week. That break comes attached to a caution, though. The weather office (IMD) has issued a red alert for Saturday, flagging the likelihood of a strong dust storm accompanied by rain. While the monsoon will still take some time to reach the capital, pre-monsoon showers are firmly on the cards.
How Strong the Winds Could Get
Alongside the red alert, IMD has cautioned that winds in several areas could blow at 60 to 70 kilometres per hour, with gusts climbing to as much as 80 kilometres per hour. A few locations may see winds even stronger than that. The forecast is not limited to Delhi—similar conditions are expected across the wider NCR, where winds could reach 60 to 80 kilometres per hour, with hail possible in some pockets.
Safety Advice for Residents
The department has urged people to stay indoors while the storm passes. It has advised against standing under trees, going near electric poles, or venturing into waterlogged areas. With the rough weather likely to disrupt traffic as well, residents have been asked to remain alert and follow the guidance of local authorities.
Rain, Thunder and Lightning
Delhi and its neighbouring areas can expect light to moderate rainfall. Most places will see light showers, while a few areas may get average rain. Thunder and lightning are also anticipated. Strong winds and rain were already recorded across several parts of Delhi late on Friday night, and Saturday is very likely to bring more of the same.
Temperature Outlook
According to the weather department, Saturday's maximum temperature in Delhi is expected to hover around 37 degrees Celsius, with the minimum near 23 degrees Celsius. A rail alert has also been issued.
What the Next Four Days Hold
This altered weather pattern is set to persist across Delhi-NCR for the next four days. Intermittent cloud cover, strong winds and light to moderate rain are all expected. The direct effect will be felt on the mercury, which could dip by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius—offering people a welcome escape from the intense heat.
