A routine arrest operation in Haryana's Yamunanagar spiralled into a violent confrontation when a police team trying to detain a wanted accused was surrounded by hundreds of people. The crowd included women, and the people not only roughed up the policemen but also pelted the police vehicle with stones. A video of the entire incident has surfaced.
Why the police were there
The incident took place at Deha Basti in Chhotabans in Yamunanagar district. A CIA team from Asandh in Karnal district, led by SI Praveen Kumar, had reached the area. Its objective was to arrest Rajendra Bangali, an accused wanted in a case registered under the NDPS Act.
Crowd turns hostile during the arrest
According to reports, as soon as the police team moved to detain the accused, some residents of Deha Basti came out in protest and began hurling stones at the team. The sudden pelting forced the police to retreat from the spot. Several personnel are said to have been injured in the clash.
Attack as accused was put in the vehicle
The police had managed to catch Rajendra Kumar Bangali and seat him inside their vehicle, but at that very moment a crowd of women and men launched an attack with sticks, batons, bricks and stones. The windows of the police vehicles were smashed, and the team had to pull back along with the accused.
What happens next
According to sources, police officers have taken the matter seriously and launched an investigation. Those involved in the stone pelting and the assault are being identified, and preparations are under way for legal action against them. At the same time, police efforts to arrest the accused wanted in the NDPS Act case are continuing. Officers say that attacking police personnel on government duty and obstructing official work is a serious offence under the law, and that action under the relevant sections will be taken once the investigation is complete.
