A shocking example of the hunger for social media likes and views has emerged from Panipat in Haryana, and it has left the entire city stunned. In their bid to film a reel, a handful of youths pulled off a stunt that put not only their own lives but also the lives of hundreds of people travelling on the national highway at direct risk.
What Happened On The Overbridge
The incident took place on an elevated overbridge built over Panipat's busy GT Road. In the viral video, a few reel-making youths can be seen standing on the bridge, and what makes it even more disturbing is that they had brought along some small children to a spot as dangerous as a national highway. Standing near the railing, the youths openly began flinging 10 rupee notes down onto the GT Road below.
A Mad Rush For Cash On The Road Below
The moment the notes started raining down from above, the traffic moving below descended into chaos. Bikers, auto drivers and pedestrians left their vehicles right in the middle of the road and dashed to collect the notes. With fast-moving vehicles all around, people were seen picking up the 10 rupee notes without any thought for their safety. Several drivers were forced to slam on their brakes amid the suddenly stopping and rushing vehicles. The only relief was that no major accident occurred in the melee, otherwise a large number of people could have been injured.
Traffic Police Stood By
The most startling part of the whole episode surfaces at the end of the video. While the youths were tearing up the rules by tossing notes from above and people below were risking their lives, personnel from the Panipat traffic police were present just a short distance away. Despite such a glaring violation, the police staff remained mere spectators, and in the video they appear completely helpless. As a result, the reel-makers comfortably finished their stunt and walked away.
Questions Being Raised
After the video went viral, there is intense anger among the aware citizens of Panipat. On social media, people are directly asking the Panipat police administration why no action was taken against the troublemakers who spoiled the atmosphere by flinging notes amid moving traffic on a national highway. The biggest question of all is this: if a speeding vehicle had run over the children or passers-by who were grabbing the notes, who would have been held responsible for the tragedy.
