Revamping the Traditional Mandap
In today's fast-paced world, weddings and ceremonies like Janeu have become highly high-tech, with people spending significant amounts on arrangements. However, despite these high budgets, the traditional mud mandap often retains an outdated look. To make these events truly stand out, many are now incorporating Mithila painting to transform the appearance of the mandap, adding both beauty and cultural depth to the celebration.
The Art of Mithila Painting
In the Mithilanchal region, customizing mandaps with exquisite Madhubani art has become a growing trend. The Kachni-Bharni style of painting is particularly popular, attracting visitors with its intricate patterns. TrendKia spoke with several artists in Madhubani who now offer complete packages to customize these structures according to the client's preferences.
Costs and Customization Packages
Artists like Ramesh Mandal explain that painting a standard Upanayan (Janeu) mandap typically costs between 8,000 and 10,000 rupees. For those looking for a more permanent finish, painting over a cement-coated mud structure costs approximately 15,000 rupees.
Some professionals provide comprehensive packages that include painting the house's dedicated worship area (Bhagwati ghar) and the surrounding walls. Depending on the size of the project and the size of the team involved, this full service usually costs between 10,000 and 20,000 rupees. A standard mandap can be completed by a team in about 1.5 to 2 days. While basic painting packages start from 6,000 to 10,000 rupees, opting for complex Kachni styles on larger mandaps can increase the total cost. This shift is benefiting local artists while providing a stunning, culturally rich aesthetic to auspicious occasions.
