Pre-monsoon activity has been steadily gathering pace across Madhya Pradesh, and the shift is now set to reshape daily life for residents. The weather department says the mood of the skies will change across much of the state on June 18, 2026. Several districts are likely to see thunderstorms and rain, with winds gusting at 40 to 50 kilometres per hour. A few pockets could receive light to moderate showers, raising hopes of significant relief from the harsh heat people have been enduring.
Yellow alert for 30 districts
The weather department has placed 30 districts under a yellow alert. The list covers Narmadapuram, Betul, Harda, Khandwa, Khargone, Barwani, Alirajpur, Jhabua, Dhar, Ratlam, Mandsaur, Neemuch, Shajapur, Agar-Malwa, Rajgarh, Sehore, Raisen, Vidisha, Sagar, Damoh, Narsinghpur, Jabalpur, Katni, Umaria, Shahdol, Dindori, Mandla, Balaghat, Seoni and Chhindwara. Winds in these districts could touch 40 to 50 kilometres per hour. Many places may also witness lightning and heavy rain, while some areas could see scattered light showers or cloud cover.
Chhatarpur the hottest, Pachmarhi the coolest
Over the past 24 hours, the state's weather kept swinging. Rain was recorded at several places across the Bhopal, Narmadapuram, Gwalior and Jabalpur divisions, even as some regions stayed dry. Districts such as Ratlam and Balaghat felt the bite of a heatwave. On the temperature front, Chhatarpur led the way, with the mercury climbing to 42.2 degrees Celsius. At the other end, the lowest reading of 18.4 degrees Celsius was logged at Pachmarhi in Narmadapuram.
What is driving the change
According to the weather department, two main factors are behind this shift. Moisture is streaming in from the Bay of Bengal, while a cyclonic circulation has formed over the state. The combination of the two is fuelling rapid cloud development. That is why several districts could see light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning during the afternoon and evening hours. On June 18, Jabalpur, Narsinghpur and Chhindwara in particular may see the weather turn sharp.
Caution for farmers and residents
The department has urged people to stay away from open fields, tall trees and electric poles during rough weather. Farmers have been advised to take special care while working in their fields so that lightning strikes or strong gusts do not cause harm. The Gwalior-Chambal division could also see a change with strong winds, while some districts in the Mahakaushal and Vindhya regions may experience thunder and lightning.
