People across Madhya Pradesh are caught between sweltering heat and a sharply shifting weather pattern that is finally promising some relief. The monsoon is still a few days away from reaching the state, but the pre-monsoon spell that precedes it has already taken hold. For several days now, many districts have seen thunderstorms, rain and gusty winds, and the same conditions are expected to continue today, 18 June 2026.
When the Monsoon Is Expected
Forecasters believe the monsoon could arrive in Madhya Pradesh between 20 and 23 June. Until then, pre-monsoon activity will keep influencing the weather. Today, several districts are likely to witness thunderstorms along with strong winds blowing at 40 to 50 km per hour, while some areas may receive light to moderate rain. This change is expected to bring some respite from the scorching heat.
Yellow Alert Across 30 Districts
The weather department has declared a yellow alert for 30 districts today. The list includes Jabalpur, Sagar, Ratlam, Narmadapuram, Vidisha, Katni, Harda, Khandwa, Shajapur, Khargone, Mandsaur, Barwani, Alirajpur, Agar-Malwa, Jhabua, Dhar, Neemuch, Rajgarh, Sehore, Raisen, Damoh, Betul, Narsinghpur, Umaria, Shahdol, Dindori, Mandla, Chhindwara, Balaghat and Seoni. All of these districts could see winds gusting at 40 to 50 km per hour. Lightning and heavy rain have also been forecast at several places, while a few districts may experience isolated light showers or cloudy skies.
What the Last 24 Hours Looked Like
Over the past 24 hours, the state's weather kept changing. Rain was recorded at several places in the Bhopal, Gwalior, Jabalpur and Narmadapuram divisions, while many districts stayed dry. Districts such as Balaghat and Ratlam, on the other hand, felt the effect of a heatwave. The highest temperature in the state was 42.2 degrees Celsius at Chhatarpur, while the lowest, 18.4 degrees Celsius, was recorded at Pachmarhi in Narmadapuram.
Why the Weather Is Changing
According to the weather department, clouds are building up due to the combined effect of moisture streaming in from the Bay of Bengal and a cyclonic circulation forming over the state. This is why many districts could see light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning during the afternoon and evening today. Jabalpur, Chhindwara and Narsinghpur are likely to see the sharpest shift, with the strongest chances of rain.
Key Precautions for Residents
Stay indoors during thunderstorms. If you must step out, avoid taking shelter under trees or electric poles. Given the risk of lightning strikes, it is wise to unplug electronic appliances at home. Avoid working in open fields and grounds during storms, and keep away from trees, power lines and construction sites. While driving, keep your speed low and maintain a firm grip on the steering wheel. It is also advisable not to lean against concrete walls or lie down on concrete floors.
Advice for Livestock Owners
Do not leave animals near open grounds, ponds, rivers or any water source. At night, keep all animals in safe and sheltered enclosures. Avoid sending them out for open grazing during the intense afternoon heat, and arrange enough drinking water and shaded space for them. During lightning and storms, do not tie animals under trees.
Ways to Stay Safe From the Heat
Keep drinking enough water to stay hydrated. Avoid going out in the harsh sun between 12 noon and 4 pm. Wear light-coloured, loose cotton clothing, and cover your head with a cloth, cap or umbrella whenever you step out in the sun.
