Indore's contaminated water crisis simply refuses to end. After Bhagirathpura, panic has now gripped Mahavir Nagar in Ward No. 16, where sewage water has seeped into the locality's only borewell. The dirty water flowed straight into household taps, and after drinking it, more than 10 people, including children, women and the elderly, fell ill. The situation turned serious enough that several children had to be admitted to hospital.
Taps Carried Trouble, Not Clean Water
According to residents of Mahavir Nagar, what was coming out of their taps these days was misery rather than clean water. People in the area say foul-smelling, dirty water had been flowing for several days and complaints were lodged, but the officials in charge did not appear to take it seriously. As a result, people kept drinking the same water out of compulsion, and its effects are now showing up as illness. Almost every home in the locality has someone struggling with vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach pain.
Every Household Affected, Families Describe Their Ordeal
Local resident Rekha Shrivas said both her young children are sick and suffering from vomiting and diarrhoea. She said one to two people from every house can be found unwell, and the water gives off a stench.
Another resident, Chapa Verma, said the water had been bad for 8 days and her daughter had come down with vomiting and diarrhoea. She said people across the area are falling sick one after another and heading to the hospital, while the real cause came to light only two or three days ago.
Municipal Body Springs Into Action
As the matter snowballed, officials of the municipal corporation reached the spot and launched an inspection at ground zero, checking everything from the borewell to the water pipeline. The officials examined the borewell and sent water samples for testing. Residents of the area have, for now, been advised to boil their water before drinking it.
Indore Municipal Commissioner Ashish Kumar Pathak said he has spoken to the ward councillor about the issue and that an investigation is underway.
The Same Question, Once Again, After Bhagirathpura
The biggest question is what lesson the municipal corporation actually learned even after the Bhagirathpura episode. Why did dirty, contaminated water keep reaching people's homes instead of clean water, and who will finally own up to the responsibility? It was amid these very questions that the TrendKia team reached the ground and investigated the entire matter.
