A case that has rattled the local sports community has emerged from Maharashtra's Palghar district, where a young, minor footballer says the trust she placed in her coach was exploited to abuse and blackmail her over a period of years. At the centre of the allegations is a private football coach, now in police custody.
The Accused and the Charges
Police have arrested Abhijeet Mendal, a 36-year-old private football coach. He has been booked under sections covering rape and criminal intimidation, along with multiple provisions of the POCSO Act, which protects children from sexual offences. The complainant was a minor at the time, and given the gravity of the accusations, police are treating the matter with utmost seriousness.
How It Began
According to the complaint, the ordeal traces back to 2023, when the victim enrolled at a football training academy in Vasai. It was there that Abhijeet Mendal coached her. The victim says he first earned her trust as a mentor, then drew her under his influence by dangling the promise of big opportunities and a strong career in football. Under that pretext, it is alleged, he raped the minor on several occasions.
Explicit Videos Turned Into a Weapon
The victim alleges that during this period the coach also recorded objectionable videos and took photographs of her. That material later became a tool of coercion. He is accused of using these same videos and pictures to blackmail her repeatedly, leaving her feeling trapped.
Three Years of Fear and Threats
The victim told police she remained a target of this abuse for nearly three years. When she tried to distance herself and cut off all contact, the accused allegedly began threatening to circulate the videos and images on social media. Gripped by that fear and mental pressure, she stayed silent for a long time and lived under severe stress.
The Family Steps In
Worn down by the relentless harassment and mental torment, the victim finally told her family everything. The family wasted no time in approaching the police and filing a complaint. After a preliminary inquiry, the Manikpur police station in Vasai arrested the accused. He was produced before a court and has since been remanded to judicial custody.

Police say a detailed investigation is in progress, including the examination of electronic evidence and other aspects of the case. The episode has spread anxiety among local parents and the sports community, reviving difficult questions about how safe children are in coaching environments.
