An incident from Tamil Nadu's Tiruvallur district has shaken the conscience of the entire state. A girl of just three years, from a migrant family living in the industrial belt of Gummidipoondi, became the victim of an alleged sexual assault and later lost her life. She was found in a critical condition among bushes and died while undergoing treatment at a hospital.
How the tragedy unfolded
According to police, on the day of the incident the child was playing close to her home. A short while later she suddenly went missing, and the family began searching for her. During this search, a woman from the area spotted the girl lying severely injured in the bushes. She immediately alerted people nearby, and the child was rushed to a hospital. Despite every effort by the doctors, her life could not be saved.
Trust of acquaintance exploited
Police have arrested a migrant labourer from Bihar in connection with the case. Initial investigation has revealed that the accused and the girl's family knew each other. Misusing that very familiarity, the accused lured the child with the offer of a biscuit and took her away with him.
Anger erupts in the locality
According to local residents, the accused was caught after the incident and an enraged crowd handed him over to the police. As soon as word of the crime spread, a wave of outrage swept through the area. In their fury, some other people were also suspected, and cases of them being beaten came to light. However, the police have clarified that the investigation so far points to the role of only one person and that this is not a case of a group crime.
Murder charges added after POCSO
Police had initially registered a case against the accused under the POCSO Act. Now, following the child's death, several other serious charges including murder are being added to the case. Officials say the investigation is being carried out swiftly and that a chargesheet will be filed in court soon.
Law and order in question again
The incident has surfaced at a time when rising crimes against women and children in Tamil Nadu are already a matter of concern. The issue had been raised prominently during the assembly elections too, and once again questions are being directed at the government over law and order. DMK leader TKS Elangovan demanded strict action against the guilty, saying the government needs to take a tougher stand in such cases and that criminals should receive harsh punishment. Calling it a social problem, he said the safety of women and children must be the government's top priority.
Questions over the 'Singappen' initiative
It is worth recalling that after taking office, Chief Minister Joseph Vijay had announced the creation of a special protection force called 'Singappen' for the safety of women and girls. The initiative had been formally launched only a few days earlier. But this latest incident has raised fresh questions about how effective these safety measures really are.
The numbers paint a grim picture
Data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) lays bare the scale of the problem. In 2023, more than 1.77 lakh cases of crimes against children were registered across the country, of which over 67,000 were filed under the POCSO law alone. The Tiruvallur case has once again fuelled a nationwide debate over child safety and the need for swift justice in such matters.
