Stand-Up Comic Madhur Virli Pulls the Plug on His Social Media as an Old Rape 'Joke' Clip Sparks Outrage

Before the row over Pranit More could even settle, an old performance clip of stand-up comedian Madhur Virli resurfaced, triggering fury over insensitive rape remarks and pushing the comic to deactivate his social media account.

The wave of controversy washing over India's stand-up comedy scene shows no sign of slowing. With the row surrounding Pranit More still under investigation, another comedian has now found himself in the eye of the storm. This time the spotlight has turned on Madhur Virli, after a snippet from one of his older performances began circulating online and quickly drew loud demands for action against him.

What Triggered the Backlash

In the viral clip, Madhur Virli is seen cracking jokes around the deeply sensitive subject of rape. The footage shows him attempting to reason why some criminals go on to murder their victims after a rape. It is precisely these remarks that viewers have slammed as offensive and insensitive, setting off a flood of criticism across social media.

The Complaint Reaches the NCW

One user shared the video on X and tagged the National Commission for Women (NCW), urging the authorities to step in. The post read, 'After Pranit, now Madhur Virli has made such an insensitive comment against rape victims. People are spouting any nonsense in the name of 'dark comedy.' Strict action is needed.' The user added, '@NCWIndia take strict action against this vile man 'Madhur Virli.''

Audiences Come Under Fire Too

The anger was not aimed at the comedian alone; many turned their questions on the people laughing along in the crowd. One user wrote, 'Meet Madhur Virli, who is mocking the rape of women. So-called educated liberal audiences are even laughing at it. Hope the same happens with their families! Then we'll see the reaction of these liberals. Will they still laugh the same way?'

Another social media user took issue with the very choice of topic, writing, 'There are thousands of subjects you can write a joke on, but he picked such a sensitive one for a few laughs... I even feel sorry for his audience, who paid money to watch this Madhur Virli's show.'

The Comic Steps Away

Amid the mounting criticism and online outrage, Madhur Virli has deactivated his social media account. Notably, Pranit More had landed in a strikingly similar mess only recently, when a clip of his stand-up act went viral. In that video, the comedian was seen making remarks about a woman and a 370-rupee biryani — a bit that snowballed into a major controversy.
