Some bonds are forged not by blood but by the heart — and when they are, the walls of religion simply fall away. Harsolav village in Nagaur district recently witnessed exactly such a moment, when a Hindu family arrived at the wedding of their Muslim ‘dharm behan’s’ daughter to perform the traditional mayra ritual with full ceremony. It was far more than a custom; it was a living message of love, harmony and human kinship that left everyone present deeply moved.
A Brother Arrives at His Sister’s Doorstep
Rakesh Naradhaniya, a resident of Naradhaniyon ki Dhani, travelled to Harsolav along with Dharmendra (son of Ramkishore Fauji), his family members and dozens of fellow villagers. The occasion was the wedding celebrations at the home of his dharm behan, Baju (Tahira). Following every ritual to the letter, Rakesh performed the ‘bhaat’ and upheld the dignity of the relationship. The women of the family took an active part in the mayra ceremony, while members of the Hindu family pitched in shoulder to shoulder with the wedding preparations as well.
Watching a Hindu family carry out traditional rites at the home of a Muslim sister filled the villagers with pride. Those present described it as a living example of social harmony and warmly praised this rare display of brotherhood.
A Bond Seven Years in the Making
This relationship is not a new one. About seven years ago, Baju (Tahira) — wife of Harsolav resident Mustakeem Rajawat — adopted Rakesh Naradhaniya of Naradhaniyon ki Dhani as her dharm bhai. Since then, the two families have stood by each other equally in joy and sorrow, sharing a warm, family-like closeness. On an occasion as special as his sister’s daughter’s wedding, the brother deepened that bond further, presenting her family with Rs 31,000 in cash along with other essential gifts.
Two Communities Long Woven Together
Among those present on the occasion were Dharmendra Naradhaniya, Ramnivas Janni, Rameshwar Naradhaniya, Manoj Naradhaniya and former sarpanch Kanhaiyalal Gurjar, along with many others from the surrounding area. Ramnivas Janni said that Hindu and Muslim communities in Harsolav have lived together in love and brotherhood for years. The sense of belonging between the two communities here, he said, is so deep that it never even feels as though the mayra is being performed for a family of another faith.
‘Religion Never Came Between Us’
An emotional Baju (Tahira) said that religion had never come between her and her dharm bhai Rakesh. She regards her dharm bhai and his wife exactly as she would her own brother and sister-in-law. In her words, the two families have always shared a bond of affection, trust and respect — and that, she believes, is the true identity of their village.
