The famous line from the film Dangal, 'Mhari chhoriyan chhora se kam hai ke' (are our daughters any less than sons), has stopped being just a dialogue in Jodhpur's Luni area. It has turned into living reality, and the reason is 18-year-old Sharmila Choudhary of Basni Jhutha village. With sheer grit and self-belief, she has set out completely alone on her motorcycle for a religious journey of nearly 3000 kilometres. Undertaking such a long and difficult route at so young an age, and without a single companion, has made her the talk of the entire region.
A Vow to Reach Uttarakhand's Toughest Shrines
For this journey, Sharmila has resolved to visit the major and most challenging pilgrimage sites of Devbhoomi Uttarakhand. The winding roads and sharp, dangerous bends of the mountains are a serious test for any rider, yet the distance seems to shrink before her determination. Watching her resolve, not only her fellow villagers but young people across nearby areas have been left amazed. For the youth, her ride has emerged as a powerful lesson and a big source of inspiration.
Faith Carrying a Message of Women's Strength
Her trip is not limited to seeking blessings and religious devotion alone. Through it she is sending society a strong message of women's empowerment, self-reliance and the strength of the country's youth. At a time when daughters are proving their mettle in every field, from education and sports to space and the armed forces, Sharmila has shown once again that no path stays difficult when there is a will to achieve something. Her decision to travel solo is set to help change society's old and conservative mindset.
A Role Model for the Daughters of Rural India
Stepping out of a rural setting to take on such a big journey is no small thing in itself. Sharmila's fearless attitude is becoming a source of courage for countless young women and daughters who often hold back from their dreams because of social pressure or hesitation. People believe that such bold steps will encourage a positive and protective outlook towards daughters in society and give them equal opportunities to move ahead.
A Send-Off With Tilak and Sweets
Just before setting off, Sharmila Choudhary was given a grand and enthusiastic welcome in Basni Jhutha village. On the occasion, villagers, respected members of the community and her family applied a tilak on her forehead, fed her sweets and showered her with good wishes. Everyone prayed for her safe and successful journey. The villagers proudly said that Sharmila has raised the prestige of the entire region and presented a magnificent example of the limitless strength of daughters before the whole country.
