One Evening's Rain, an Entire City Underwater
Thursday evening brought only a few hours of heavy rain to Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan, yet it was more than enough to reduce the city to chaos. Water rose 3 to 4 feet on major roads, key intersections filled up like ponds, and residents found themselves effectively trapped indoors. What was supposed to be a pre-monsoon shower turned into a full demonstration of how fragile the city's infrastructure really is.
Biker and Motorcycle Swallowed by a Hidden Pothole
Among the many incidents that unfolded, one stood out sharply. A young man riding his motorcycle hit a deep pothole that was completely invisible beneath the floodwater, and both he and his bike sank into it. People standing nearby moved quickly to pull him out. Video footage of the incident surfaced and has been spreading fast on social media.
Vehicles Stalled, Riders Pushed Their Way Through Knee-Deep Water
Across the city, two-wheelers stalled mid-road as waterlogged engines gave out. Riders waded through knee-deep floods, pushing their bikes and scooters by hand to get to safety. Cars were similarly trapped in the deluge. Traffic queues stretched on for long stretches, and commuters spent hours trying to reach their destinations.
Flooding Spreads Across the District
The waterlogging was not confined to the main city. The towns of Pilani, Chidawa, Surajgarh and Khetri in Jhunjhunu district also saw severe inundation. Water collected outside shops in local markets, bringing commercial activity to a halt. Pedestrians were left hunting for any passable route through the flooded streets.
Pre-Monsoon Rain Lays Bare Empty Official Claims
Every year before the monsoon, local authorities announce that drains have been cleaned and that drainage systems are ready. Thursday's rainfall dismantled those assurances in a matter of hours. Drains overflowed at multiple points and several areas were left with no outlet for the water at all. The contrast between official statements and the scene on the ground could not have been more stark.
Residents Are Tired of the Annual Flood Cycle
Citizens of Jhunjhunu say they watch this same crisis unfold every single monsoon season, yet no permanent fix is ever delivered. They are now calling on authorities to identify the worst-affected areas, build a proper plan specifically for those zones, and invest in a drainage network that can actually handle heavy rainfall without turning the city into a river.
