Gawri Devi, the renowned Maand singer who carried the resonance of Rajasthan's folk music tradition across the country and the world, is no more. She breathed her last at the age of 98 at her home in Pali at around 8 pm on Thursday night. Her passing has cast a wave of deep grief over Rajasthan's folk music world. Her last rites will be performed today at 11 am at the Mokshadham in Sarvodaya Nagar. She leaves behind a legacy of folk music that will continue to inspire generations to come.
Gawri Devi's name was counted among the most respected and beloved artists of Rajasthan's Maand singing tradition. Through her melodious voice and folk tunes, she lifted the cultural identity of the state to new heights for nearly eight decades. Her singing clearly carried the fragrance of the desert soil, the emotions of folk life, and the soul of Rajasthani culture. This legacy is now being carried forward by her daughter-in-law Sundardevi and her granddaughters Ganga and Neetu.
Fame Through 'Kesariya Balam Padharo Mhare Desh'
Born into a family of folk artists in Koran village of Rajasthan's Barmer district, Gawri Devi earned a special place across the country by lending her voice to 'Kesariya Balam Padharo Mhare Desh', counted among the most popular folk songs. Along with this, she gave voice to numerous traditional Maand songs that remain immensely popular among folk music lovers even today. Her performances were not confined to Rajasthan alone; she also wove her magic on various cultural stages across the nation. She received her early training in music from her own parents.

Having made Pali her karmabhumi after marriage, Gawri Devi advanced folk music at a time when the influence of modern music was spreading rapidly. Despite this, she kept the core spirit of traditional Maand singing alive and worked to connect the new generation with it. Alongside her husband Mishrilal Rao, she gave memorable performances across the country. The unique blend of classical refinement and folk feeling in her singing is what gave her a distinct identity. In recognition of her invaluable contribution to the field of folk music, she was honoured with several prestigious accolades. She received many awards and honours, including the Lifetime Achievement Award. These honours were not merely for her singing, but were also a recognition of her contribution to preserving and promoting Rajasthani folk culture.

Though Gawri Devi may no longer be among us today, her songs, her voice and her devotion to folk music will live on forever. Her name will always be remembered with respect and pride in Rajasthan's cultural heritage. She leaves behind five sons, one daughter and a large family.
