If you are planning a trip to Darbhanga, do not leave without visiting Baba Kusheshwar Nath Mahadev. Local belief holds that whatever you ask for with a sincere heart, Baba listens. Whether it is worry about a job, an exam paper, or some trouble at home, devotees say they never return empty-handed. Set among rivers like the Kosi, Kamala and Balan, this dham is not only a seat of faith but also a peaceful journey through the lap of nature.
The story behind the name
It is said that this Shivling was installed by Kush, the son of Lord Shri Ram, which is why the place came to be called 'Kusheshwar Sthan'. Another belief is that dense kush forests once covered this land. The name Kusheshwar Nath was formed by joining the two words Kush and Ishwar, and it has stayed ever since.
How to get there
Buses for Kusheshwar Sthan leave the Darbhanga bus stand every 20 minutes. From Darbhanga railway station, you head a little ahead through Donar Chowk and then travel via Sonki, Dharora, Benipur and Birol straight to Kusheshwar Sthan. The route is easy and the fare is light on the pocket.
Darshan and the prayer ritual
On reaching the temple, the custom is to first bathe in the Shivganga flowing right in front. At the ghat itself, a plate of Gangajal and flowers is available for 10 to 20 rupees. Devotees use it to perform Baba's jalabhishek. After that, offering belpatra and dhatura while chanting Om Namah Shivay brings a rare sense of calm to the mind.
Food and stay
After the darshan, several hotels and eateries are just a few steps from the temple, where vegetarian food is easily available. For those wishing to stay overnight, dharamshalas and budget hotels are also on hand. In the evening, you can step out to enjoy the cool breeze and the view of the rivers.
Full arrangements for safety
Keeping devotees' convenience in mind, the Kusheshwar Sthan police station stands right opposite the temple. That is why women, the elderly and children can all have darshan without any worry. A trip to Darbhanga is considered complete only once you receive the blessing of Baba Kusheshwar Nath. Visit just once and bow your head, and with Baba's grace, wishes are said to begin coming true on their own.
