Devotees Begin Their Tuesday With Baba Mahakal as Bhasma Aarti Lights Up Ujjain’s Mahakaleshwar Temple

At the Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, the pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti and shringar darshan were held on Tuesday, 16 June 2026, drawing a large gathering of worshippers.

The temple town of Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh once again echoed with devotion on the morning of Tuesday, 16 June 2026. At the Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga temple, the grand pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti and shringar darshan were performed, and the worshippers who gathered filled the entire complex with chants of ‘Jai Mahakal’ and ‘Har Har Mahadev’.

Through the aarti, the temple remained wrapped in a divine and devotional atmosphere. Devotees took darshan of Baba Mahakal, received his prasad and prayed for relief from life’s troubles along with happiness, peace and prosperity. The shringar darshan brought every worshipper present closer to the captivating form of Lord Shri Mahakaleshwar, offering them a rare and moving experience.

What Makes Ujjain So Special

The Puranas refer to this sacred city by several names. Avantika, Avantikapuri, Kanakshringa and Ujjaini are among the names used for this holy land over the ages. Among the 12 Jyotirlingas across the country, the city of Shri Mahakaleshwar holds a distinct identity. Its greatest distinction is that, in keeping with tantric tradition, Baba Mahakal here receives a south-facing (dakshin mukhi) worship, and nowhere else in the world is Baba Mahakal seated facing south.

The Four O’Clock Bhasma Aarti

The importance of the Mahakal temple grows manifold because tradition prescribes that the Bhasma Aarti be performed here at four in the morning. This same aarti is also known as the Mangala Aarti. Six aartis are offered to Baba Mahakal through the day, but of them all, the Bhasma Aarti is considered the most special. Lakhs of devotees travel from across India and abroad to witness it.

Performed during the Brahma Muhurat, this aarti adorns Baba Mahakal in the ghata top form. A cotton cloth is taken for it, and the aarti is carried out by tying it and scattering bhasma over the Shivling. According to belief, after taking darshan of Baba Mahakal it is considered essential to also have darshan of Juna Mahakal.

The Peace This Worship Brings

The scriptures and traditions hold that worship of Mahakal calms the influences of kaal dosh, grah dosh and the threat of untimely death. Those whose horoscopes carry Shani dosh or Rahu-Ketu dosh are said to find remarkable peace through the worship of Baba Mahakal. The scriptures describe this devotion as a remover of all planetary afflictions. It is believed that within Mahakal’s domain the very effect of time dissolves, meaning the bondage of a person’s karma gradually weakens and the soul gains stability.
