Founded in 856 AD: The 1,200-Year Story of Bareilly's Shri Taponidhi Panchayati Anand Akhada and Its Tradition of Penance

Linked to Bareilly, the city of the Naths, the Shri Taponidhi Panchayati Anand Akhada is about 1,200 years old, founded in 856 AD in the Berar region as a Shaiva akhada tied to Adi Shankaracharya's Dashnami tradition.

Whenever the story of Bareilly — known across India for its saintly traditions, ancient temples and spiritual heritage as the city of the Naths — is told, one name stands out in particular: the Shri Taponidhi Panchayati Anand Akhada. Counted among the oldest and most disciplined akhadas of Sanatan Dharma, its roots run so deep that its history stretches back roughly 1,200 years.

A Journey That Began in 856 AD in Berar

According to recorded belief, the Anand Akhada was founded in the year 856 AD in the Berar region. The akhada is a link in Adi Shankaracharya's Dashnami Sanyas tradition and is regarded as one of the leading akhadas of the Shaiva sect. Its sadhus are devoted primarily to the worship of Lord Shiva, treat rigorous penance as the foundation of their practice, and remain committed to preserving Sanatan traditions.

Why Bareilly Became a Centre of Its Penance

Senior historian Dr Rajesh Kumar Sharma explains that the very city called the Nath Nagri has been a major hub of the Anand Akhada's spiritual activity. It is believed that the accomplished saints and Naga sadhus associated with the akhada performed penance here for years on end. That is why the ashrams, temples and samadhi sites they left behind in different parts of the city continue to be centres of faith to this day.

According to Dr Sharma, the akhada is also linked with Bareilly's famous Alakhnath temple. It is said that Baba Alakhiya carried out severe penance in this very area, after which the place came to be renowned as Alakhnath Dham. Even today, thousands of devotees arrive here to offer prayers.

Naga Ascetics Skilled in Both Scripture and the Sword

History bears witness that the role of the Anand Akhada's Naga sadhus was never confined to spiritual life alone. They are also considered important figures in the defence of religion and culture. Naga ascetics are regarded as adept in both shastra (scripture) and shastra (weapons), and have kept themselves dedicated to safeguarding Sanatan traditions.

A Tradition Still Alive Today

In the present day, the Anand Akhada conducts religious and spiritual activities in Bareilly as well as in many parts of the country. The Anand Ashram at Rampur Garden, the Hanuman temple in Civil Lines, the Alakhnath temple and other religious centres are all carrying this heritage forward. Within the akhada, discipline, penance and meditation are still given the highest importance.
