Why Pradosh Vrat Carries Such Weight
In Hindu tradition, the Pradosh Vrat is regarded as one of the most powerful ways to earn the blessings of Lord Shiva. The fast comes twice every month, on the Trayodashi tithi of both the Krishna Paksha and the Shukla Paksha. What makes it distinctive is that the vrat takes its name from the very day of the week on which it falls, which is why a Monday observance becomes Som Pradosh, a Thursday one Guru Pradosh and a Saturday one Shani Pradosh. Devotees who keep the fast with full devotion and discipline, performing the abhishek, worship and aarti of Lord Shiva during the Pradosh Kaal, are believed to have their wishes fulfilled.
According to the scriptures, a Pradosh Vrat observed with a sincere heart removes life's hardships and brings the blessing of happiness, prosperity, good health and well being. It is also said to open the path to moksha after death. June's first Pradosh Vrat was already observed on 12 June as Shukra Pradosh. Now comes the month's second and final Pradosh, whose correct date and method of worship have been explained by Ujjain astrologer Anand Bhardwaj.
26 or 27 June: Which Day to Keep the Fast
The second Pradosh Vrat of June 2026 falls on the Trayodashi tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Jyeshtha, which this time lands on Saturday, 27 June 2026. As per the Panchang, the Trayodashi tithi begins around 10:22 pm on the night of 26 June and concludes at roughly 12:43 am on 27 June. Since the worship of a Pradosh Vrat is always performed during the Pradosh Kaal, the fast is to be kept on 27 June even though the tithi technically begins late on the night of 26 June. This leaves no room for confusion, the correct day is Saturday, 27 June.
The Special Reward of Shani Pradosh
The fact that this Pradosh falls on a Saturday adds to its importance. It is believed that observing the Shani Pradosh fast offers protection from the malefic influence of Shani Dev. The vrat is said to grant devotees comfort and prosperity while clearing the obstacles in their lives. According to the astrologer, a seeker who fasts and worships on this day receives the grace of both Lord Shiva and Shani Dev together. It is an occasion on which unfulfilled wishes can come true, so devotees are encouraged to make the most of the day.
Step by Step Method of Worship
- On the day of the Pradosh Vrat, rise early, finish bathing, offer arghya to the Sun God and then take the sankalp, or resolve, to keep the fast.
- Clean the place of worship thoroughly and then perform the abhishek of Lord Shiva with panchamrit.
- Worship the entire Shiva family, offer bel leaves, flowers, incense and a lamp to Lord Shiva, and then recite the story of the Pradosh Vrat.
- End by performing the aarti of Lord Shiva and be sure to recite the Shiv Chalisa. Only after this should you break your fast.
