A Journey from the Mountains to Team India
Prema Rawat, a 24-year-old cricketer from the remote Sumti-Baisani village in the Bageshwar district of Uttarakhand, has achieved a milestone that many young athletes from the hills aspire to reach. She has been included in the Indian squad for the ICC Women T20 World Cup 2026, which is currently being held in England and Wales. The news of her selection has triggered celebrations throughout her home region, with well-wishers flooding her family home with congratulations.
Stepping in for Shreyanka Patil
Prema Rawat was drafted into the squad as a replacement player following the injury of off-spinner Shreyanka Patil. The ICC technical committee has officially sanctioned the move. Known for her skills as a right-handed batter, leg-spin bowler, and agile fielder, Prema's ascent to the national team is a testament to her dedication and persistent hard work.
Rising Through Domestic Cricket
Suresh Soniyal of the Bageshwar Cricket Association noted that Prema’s talent will add significant strength to the Indian lineup. During the 2023 Senior Women T20 tournament, she proved her potential by taking 16 wickets in just 10 matches. Her consistent form eventually earned her a spot in the India-A team and recognition in the Women Premier League (WPL), where she played for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
From Hockey to Cricket
Her father, Kedar Singh Rawat, serves in the Indian Air Force and is currently posted in Assam. Prema, who completed a BSc Honors degree, initially participated in hockey and athletics. Her father shared that a casual moment while watching a women's cricket match as a family sparked her interest. He challenged her to observe the game, and that moment of inspiration led her to dedicate herself fully to cricket.
A Moment of Pride for the Village
Prema’s mother, Basanti Devi, and her 90-year-old grandmother, Haruli Devi, are filled with joy over her accomplishment. Local resident Bipin Bisht shared that Prema visited the village just a few months ago, where she took the time to inspire local girls to pursue sports. Her selection is considered one of the greatest achievements in the history of cricket in Uttarakhand, establishing her as a new sporting icon for the state.
