Manu Bhaker Left Speechless as Coach Jaspal Rana, the Man Behind Her Olympic Glory, Dies of a Heart Attack at 49

Jaspal Rana, the legendary shooter and coach who guided Manu Bhaker to two bronze medals at the Paris Olympics 2024, has died of a heart attack at the age of 49; her mother says Manu is too shattered to speak about the loss.

Friday brought a deep wound to Indian sport. Jaspal Rana (Jaspal Rana), the coach, mentor and celebrated shooter who carried India's brightest marksman Manu Bhaker (Manu Bhaker) all the way to the Olympic stage, passed away suddenly after a heart attack. He was just 49. The news left fans across the country in tears, and pushed his most cherished student and his family into a grief that will not lift easily.

The words simply will not come

In this painful hour, Manu Bhaker's mother Sumedha Bhaker spoke through a choked voice, and what she said captures the depth of the loss. She explained that Manu is in no state to say anything about the passing of her ‘sir’. The blow is so personal and so close to the heart that her feelings refuse to take the shape of words. For an athlete, losing a guru is like losing a shield, and right now Manu is grappling with exactly that emptiness.

Far more than a coach and a player

The bond between Rana and Manu went well beyond trainer and trainee. It was built on unshakable trust, gruelling hard work and a stubborn determination to win back a lost identity. There was a phase when Manu's confidence had wavered, and it was at that very turn that Rana took his gifted pupil by the hand. He did not just sharpen Manu's technique; he made her mentally as solid as a rock. That partnership is what allowed Manu Bhaker to write her name into history in golden letters at the Paris Olympics 2024, winning two bronze medals. When two Olympic medals hung around Manu's neck, Rana stood behind the podium with tears of pride and satisfaction in his eyes. Today, with his pupil at the peak of her success, that very guide has fallen silent forever.

The family stayed back in Dehradun

A national shooting camp is currently under way in Dehradun, where Manu had been training for the trials of the upcoming World Cup. She had only just finished her trials on Friday when the devastating news arrived and brought everything to a standstill. Sumedha said, ‘It is not possible for Manu to say anything right now. She is in no state to put her emotions into words. We are both in Dehradun at the moment. The instant we got the news, we were about to leave for Delhi, but we were asked to stay here because sir's body is also being brought to his birthplace, Uttarakhand.’ The pain hidden in her voice was enough to show how shattered the entire family is.

A final farewell in the land of the gods

Rana was born in the hills of Uttarakhand, and fate has brought him back to this same land for his final journey. His body will be kept at his residence in Dehradun and at the shooting range he himself established, so that family members, athletes from across the country and his admirers can pay their last respects to their hero. Manu too will remain in Dehradun to bid her guru farewell. The shooting range where the two once wove dreams of bringing the country glory amid the sound of gunfire now lies wrapped in silence.

A champion and a Dronacharya

As an athlete, Rana won India countless medals, including gold at the Asian Games. But as a coach he did even more, shaping an entire new generation of shooters in the country. His firm temperament, his discipline and his devotion to the sport were his signature. Forty-nine is no age to leave. The Rana–Manu pairing still had countless records to set and many more medals to claim for India, but destiny had other plans. Rana may no longer be among us, but the lessons he gave will live on in every shot Manu fires for the country in the years to come. Each time she stands on a podium, her eyes will surely search for the guru who always stood behind her, smiling. The nation will forever bow to this great son and Dronacharya.
