A small village called Vibhutipur in Bihar's Samastipur district is in the spotlight for a story that proves a simple truth: when willpower is strong enough, physical limitations cannot block the path. Sawan Kumar, a resident of this village, has cleared JEE Advanced, one of the toughest engineering entrance exams in the country.
Polio at Two, but the Journey Never Stopped
Sawan was just two years old when polio struck. The disease left both his legs affected by roughly 70 percent locomotor disability. Yet Sawan never treated this physical challenge as a weakness. He turned it into his greatest strength and kept moving ahead in his studies.
A Path to Education That Began in the Fields
Sawan comes from a very ordinary farming family. His father, Prabhu Rai, does not own enough land to comfortably run the household, so he farms on a sharecropping basis to somehow make ends meet. Through a childhood spent amid financial hardship and physical difficulties, Sawan's spirit never weakened. He completed his early schooling at a government school in his own village.
The Spark That Started at Simultala
Sharp at his studies from a young age, Sawan cleared the entrance exam of Bihar's renowned Simultala Awasiya Vidyalaya on the strength of his talent and earned free education there. He truly announced his ability when he secured the 10th position in the entire Bihar merit list in his Class 10 board exam. It was here that the dream of reaching IIT, the country's top engineering institute, took root, and to fulfil it he travelled to Kota, the coaching hub in Rajasthan.
Talent Rewarded With an 80 Percent Scholarship
When a reputed coaching institute in Kota saw Sawan's talent and determination, it stepped forward to help and offered him an 80 percent scholarship. After that, Sawan poured everything into his preparation, working day and night.
The Results Told the Whole Story of His Hard Work
The fruit of Sawan's dedication and unbroken commitment is now there for everyone to see. He scored 99.14 percentile in JEE Main, proving the strength of his preparation. In JEE Advanced he secured rank 17,532 in the open category. In the PWD category he achieved All India Rank (AIR) 22, a mark of his extraordinary achievement. On top of that, he secured the 9th rank across the country in the OBC-NCL PWD category, bringing pride to his family, his teachers and his entire region.
Physical challenges can only bind the body, not your dreams and thoughts. – Sawan Kumar
